An 83-year-old knitter has become the go-to for celebrities’ Oscar-nominated outfits, including Meryl Streep and Colin Farrell’s appearance in The Banshees of Inisherin.
Delia Barry’s jumpers have stolen the show in the Oscar-nominated picture, and having started knitting as a child, she has subsequently manufactured clothes for A-list celebrities all around Hollywood.
‘It basically started off from my local cancer support group, which I’m engaged in,’ Delia explained on Friday’s Lorraine, noting that someone from the group had suggested her when she joined following her husband’s untimely death.
Lorraine pointed out that while Delia had knitted jumpers for celebrities such as Christian Bale, it was The Banshees of Inisherin’s sweaters that had gained recognition.
Delia remarked of one of Colin’s jumpers in the film, ‘I believe the collar is the big attraction, since it’s quite a long collar.’
She went on to explain about how difficult the ‘task’ was, saying: ‘If I had to do it again, I’d have to start all over again.
‘I didn’t write it down! It’s in my head!’
‘That means nobody else can do it,’ Lorraine replied, stunned at the revelation.
‘I knitted two of those,’ Delia continued, but admitted that none of the celebrities got to keep the jumpers.
Brendan Gleeson, on the other hand, did ask her to knit a sweater for him when the clothes from the film were left in the studio’s archives.
Talking about what it’s like to see her creations on screen, Delia said: ‘I went just to see the jumpers at first, but I’ll have to go back and see it properly’.
‘I only knit when they want something,’ she added, saying that knitting is ‘very therapeutic.’
‘It’s great at my age to have a bit of excitement like this,’ she concluded, talking about the movie’s nomination.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
