Ben Schwartz has spoken up about working on Renfield alongside Nicolas Cage and being in awe of the Hollywood legend behind the scenes.
Along with Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Adrian Martinez, they co-starred in a highly modern version of Dracula.
Ben reminisced on how ‘wonderful’ it was to see the 59-year-old still dressed to the nines as the cameras stopped running at the New York premiere ahead of the April 14 release.
‘It was amazing,’ the Parks and Recreation favorite told us. ‘The best part is when they say cut and we have some time in our actor chairs, he’s obviously Nic Cage at that moment.
‘While he’s dressed in that incredible outfit, I’ll be like, “Hey, so The Rock, a great movie, can I ask you some questions about it?”
‘It would just be amazing watching him talk with the teeth and fangs about Adaptation or whatever it was.’
Nic, of course, went over and beyond for the role of the terrifying vampire, shaving his teeth so that fangs could fit over them.
Aside from changing his appearance, he also explained how he managed to enter the psyche of one of history’s most terrifying individuals.
‘Whenever I play a character, whether it’s in a dramatic movie or whether it’s horror or fantasy, like Renfield, I still approach it the same way,’ he said on the red carpet. ‘I try to understand the character, try to find the truth in the character.
‘I always believed, even from reading the book, that Dracula was a study of love in exile, not “and”. Love in exile. That he is symbolic of unrequited love, and whenever you feel you’re not getting the love back, it’s almost as if you go bad.
‘Dracula is a character who has made a contract with dark forces, and he has this curse of eternal existence, in which he’s constantly getting his heart broken again and again.
‘To me, those are human experiences, but the Dracula character becomes a symbol of that.’
Ben played Teddy Lobo, a mafia enforcer who gets on the wrong side of Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) and police officer Rebecca (Awkwafina).
We’ll be seeing more of the Sonic icon in the future, as he’s scheduled to perform his improv comedy act at the Eventim Apollo in London on July 27.
”I’m really happy because this is my first time ever taking my improv act outside of America or Canada,” he said, spilling the beans on what we may anticipate. It’ll be the first time seeing how this extended form improv translates over there [and] how it feels.
‘I’m obsessed with the UK’s sense of humor. I’m a huge Stath Lets Flats fan. Jamie [Demetriou], I think he’s a genius. I also tried to make an American version of the Wrong Mans here.
‘I’m obsessed with the humor so my hope is that it’s going to be wonderful and great.’
Renfield is out in cinemas on April 14.
