Fans of the renowned BBC show Race Across the World were left feeling uneasy watching Wednesday night’s episode.
Married contestants Zainib, 32, and Mobeen, 31, visited a rodeo ranch in Saskatchewan as teams of two continue to sprint across Canada without flying or using smartphones and on shoestring budgets.
They agreed to labour at the ranch in exchange for food and lodging, and at one especially uncomfortable lunch with the farm’s Christian owners, they disclosed they were Muslims.
A extremely awkward hush greeted Zainib and Mobeen, which did not go unnoticed.
Taking to Twitter to discuss the moment, one person wrote: ‘Uncomfortable to watch the initial reaction that family had to Zainab and Mobeen revealing they are Muslim. I thought Christians were meant to be loving. Yikes.’
Another social media user echoed: ‘It’s strange that the Christian family didn’t seem accepting when they said they were Muslim. Not very Christian!!?’ while someone else tweeted: ‘That silence was awful. FFS, they’re Muslims get over it.’
‘Eeek – the silencewhen Zainib says they’re Muslim,’ another social media user chimed in.
Touching upon the awkward encounter, Zainib said during the show: ‘I didn’t really expect it to go as silent as it did.
‘There was a noticeable change. It’s uncomfortable but I think it’s important they know we are Muslim and we’re really nice and normal people.’
Metro.co.uk spoke to with Zainib last month about the programme and how it affected her and Mobeen’s marriage.
‘We’ve been married nine years now and [the show] has made us stronger,’ Zainib shared, adding: ‘It’s made me realize how glad I am that he’s my person.’
When asked if the stress of rushing across a continent without credit cards or internet generated many fights, Zainib responded calmly.
‘Like with any relationship, there are going to be times when you get on each other’s nerves and have a bit of a falling out because you disagree or whatnot, but nothing major.’
