The cost of living issue is affecting all aspects of personal budget, including pet ownership.
Having a pet, particularly cats and dogs, can cost a lot of money each month – and that’s just the standard expenditures. What if your cherished friend requires an unexpected journey (or trips) to the vet due to an accident or illness?
Luckily, assistance is available. Owners have alternatives for ensuring their dogs receive the treatment they require, ranging from payment plans to low- or no-cost veterinarian care.
Read on to learn more.
1. Before you do anything further, consult with your veterinarian and be honest about your financial situation. They are the ideal people to advise you on your alternatives.
2. If your dog need medicine, ask for a prescription. You’ll probably be able to purchase it cheaper from a pharmacy, though you’ll still have to pay for the prescription..
3. Research vet clinics around you. Some specifically aim to offer low-cost care and there are some not-for-profit clinics funded by companies such as the Animal Trust.
4. Some veterinarians provide a payment plan to spread the expense of large bills. Remember, this is a loan, so make certain you can afford the monthly installments or you may be charged penalty interest.
5. The People’s Dispensary For Sick Animals, or PDSA, provides low-cost and even free veterinary care to sick or wounded dogs whose owners are struggling financially. Eligibility varies by region, but if you are currently receiving benefits, it is worth checking to see whether you are eligible to apply.
6. The RSPCA will sometimes provide funding through local branches and hospitals to assist with bills.
