Jonny Lee Miller revealed on Monday that he is now a New York City firefighter.
The 50-year-old actor, who recently portrayed British Prime Minister Sir John Major in the fifth season of The Crown, received congratulatory messages from celebrities and fans alike.
Jonny said he couldn’t wait to start helping the Fire Island neighbourhood after posting a photo of himself and his fellow Suffolk County Fire Academy grads.
He wrote: ‘Today I qualified as a Firefighter 1 after a 5-month course at Suffolk County Fire Academy.’
The British star continued: ‘Huge thank you to all the instructors, but especially Chief Sicilian, who took great care of class 2, and never got mad at us (externally).
‘Can’t wait to serve the community I love on Fire Island NY.’
Anna Friel, David Arquette, and Jason Wong were among those to congratulate Jonny in the comments area beneath his image.
According to the Suffolk Fire Academy, the Firefighter 1 training is the “initial entry programme for firefighting personnel.”
According to the academy’s website, ‘Firefighter I introduces firefighting ideas, practises, and tactics essential for success within the fire service.’
Jonny’s most recent high-profile part was as Sir John Major, whom he stated he grew to ‘like and admire’ during filming The Crown because they had commonalities despite their different political beliefs.
Sir John was Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997, and Jonny reflected on how his impression of Sir John had changed dramatically throughout that time.
‘I grew up in a very socialist, a pretty left-wing family,’ Jonny told Metro.co.uk and other press ahead of the season’s release late last year. I’m a fairly lefty, and when I was a kid, we felt we knew who John Major was and what it was all about.’
‘He got a lot of flak back in the day,’ he added, ‘[but] the more I learned about him the more I began to like him, and we had a lot of similarities.’
From 2012 until 2019, Jonny received great praise for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the US series Elementary, an updated version of the classic detective narrative starring Lucy Liu as a gender-swapped Joan Watson and Natalie Dormer as Jamie Moriarty.
Prior to that, he appeared in Doctor Who, EastEnders, Casualty, and Prime Suspect.
