The successful BBC programme Vigil will return for a second season, with the upcoming season focusing on the sky with a brand-new investigation.
The first season, which aired in 2021, follows Detective Amy Silva (Suranne Jones), who boards the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil after a crew member’s death is ruled an accidental overdose, although there are suspicions of foul play.
There was already rumours of the show’s continuance just a week after the finale aired, but it’s now confirmed that another season is on the way.
Amy and Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) will be drawn into the realm of the British air force in the upcoming inquiry.
Silva and Longacre are charged with determining the reason of many mysterious deaths at a Scottish military base.
When they enter the hostile and tight lines of the air force, they must face the dreadful combat of tomorrow while fighting for their own destiny.
World Productions’ (Line of Duty, Showtrial, Rescue Me, and Bodyguard) six-part drama will begin production in Scotland soon, before travelling to Morocco.
Romola Garai and Dougray Scott are reportedly scheduled to join the cast.
Gary Lewis as DSU Robertson returns for the second season, along with newcomers Amir El-Masry, David Elliot, Chris Jenks, Tommy Sim’aan, Oscar Salem, Jonathan Ajayi, and Hiba Medina.
Suranne expressed her excitement about rejoining the team and ‘continuing our adventure’.
‘We have brilliant new scripts and some amazing additions to the cast. Buckle up. It’s quite a ride,’ she added.
After the announcement she also shared a photo of the draft of the first episode, writing: ‘New story. New team. No Submarines!! .. think you might like it. Let’s get filming it then…’
Rose noted that they have been prepared for ‘another gripping case for us to grapple with in a whole new setting’.
Meanwhile, Romola stated that she intended to give the show’s “continuing interesting, complex, and exhilarating storyline” justice.
The first season of Vigil was the most-watched new drama debut on UK television since Bodyguard in 2018, with over 13 million views.
It was also nominated for an International Emmy and a BAFTA for Best Drama Series.
Vigil is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
