Despite the fact that the programme ended one episode earlier than expected, Da’Vine Joy Randolph has stated that it is “everyone’s aim” to make a second season.
The HBO series, created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, has been one of the most talked-about shows this year, but it’s received criticism from reviewers and fans alike for its graphic material, with some even calling it “torture porn.”
There were also signs of trouble during production when director Amy Seimetz left the show after several of the six episodes were completed, with reports earlier this year claiming that when Levinson took over as director, he’scrapped the nearly-finished $54-75 million project to rewrite and reshoot the entire thing’.
Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, the show’s star, revealed earlier this week that just five episodes will be published, with the last episode premiering this weekend.
While the show’s future has been questionable, Da’Vine, who portrayed Destiny, the manager of troubled pop sensation Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), has recently stated that there are no plans to cancel it.
‘I think that everyone’s intention is to have a second season,’ she said.
‘This was never intended to be a limited series. HBO has been very happy with it — so much so that there were rumours that we were cancelled, and then HBO went on Twitter [to dispute the rumours], which I think they rarely do.
‘Nothing is official, but HBO is quite happy,’ she added when speaking to Variety.
Earlier this month HBO shared on social media that it was ‘being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined’.
It added: ‘It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.’
Da’Vine referred to Sam as a “genius” in the episode and predicted that the season will finish satisfactorily.
‘There is no way that HBO would be so hyped and excited about this project if this was going to be a surface soft porn TV show,’ she continued.
‘That’s not his M.O. But I get it — based on what people have seen so far, they have formed these ideas, but I think it will be very interesting to see how people respond to this last episode and see how things turn.
‘It’s going to show you something different that we haven’t seen in a while.’
The programme sparked controversy after insiders told Rolling Stone earlier this year that it had gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails” and was “in turmoil.”
Tesfaye quickly responded, slamming the newspaper with a clip from the concert that dubbed the magazine “irrelevant.”
