*Warning: this contains spoilers for Fool Me Once
Michelle Keegan’s new Netflix drama Fool Me Once has captivated viewers to the point that they were calling in sick to binge-watch the episode, and the show’s heartbreaking finale has left many breathless.
Who killed Michelle’s character Maya’s husband Joe (Richard Armitage) and her sister Claire (Natalie Anderson) was the major question lurking over the drama, which also starred Dame Joanna Lumley.
Before we get to that… strap yourselves in as it’s a truly wild ride and look away now if you don’t want to know how Fool Me Once ends.
Let’s start at the beginning: Maya was fired from the military after investigative journalist Corey (Laurie Kynaston) revealed the information that she had carried out an airstrike that killed hundreds.
Corey, on the other hand, was hiding an even more damning truth about the fatal incident: audio evidence that Maya had willfully defied directives from the control room to halt shooting.
Claire approached Corey and negotiated an agreement to swap information about the dishonest and lethal procedures of the pharmaceutical firm she worked for, which was controlled by Joe’s family, the Burketts.
Joe learnt Claire had uncovered the corporation had lied about the safety of an antibiotic, when in fact it had killed people or had serious and life-changing negative effects, and was intending to tell Corey.
But he arrived before, breaking into Claire’s house and shooting her with a revolver from his and Maya’s armoury, which was kept in their basement.
Maya launched her own research into Claire’s death and began to suspect Joe of murdering her, so she resolved to face him in order to find out the truth.
However, before doing so, she replaced the decorative, deactivated handgun for a functional one, pocketing the latter.
When Maya expressed her concerns, Joe drew his revolver – but, unknown to him, he had taken the deactivated one – and fired at her.
That was all the validation Maya needed, and she murdered Joe on the spot, covering it up as a botched burglary.
Judith (Dame Joanna Lumley), Joe’s mother, was certain Maya was hiding facts concerning Joe’s death.
She bribed Maya’s nanny to produce a deep-fake picture of Joe on Maya’s nanny camera in an attempt to catch her out, as a kind of psychological warfare.
Meanwhile, officer Sami (Adeel Akhtar) was investigating Joe’s murder and had enough evidence to arrest her after discovering the same gun that murdered Claire and Joe and was the same manufacture as the handgun in Maya’s armoury.
Maya went to Judith’s house, knowing her time was up, and they had an explosive battle, with Maya admitting she killed Joe and threatening to reveal her company’s secrets.
Judith, on the other hand, assures Maya that any information the Burkett family’s corporation has harmed millions of lives can never be proven owing to their power and fortune, as her son Neil (James Northcote) takes a revolver that Maya had deliberately placed next to him.
He shoots Maya many times, but just before she dies, she directs Judith’s gaze to the mantelpiece, where there is a nanny camera, the same one Judith used to influence Maya.
The nanny camera is linked to Corey’s live blog, where he, officer Sami, and the rest of the world watch in horror as Maya dies.
However, by risking her own life, Maya not only ensured that a member of the Burkett family was sentenced to death for murder, but she also videotaped Judith saying that she knew the narcotics were dangerous but sold them nonetheless.
