The days of betting on a Netflix series based on a two-line summary are quickly gone.
As the streaming giant’s collection of material develops, we rely more than ever on others’ recommendations for guidance.
Who better to listen to than Rotten Tomatoes’ professional critics? Every programme receives a percentage score from the review site, and a surprising number have received a flawless 100%.
Baby Reindeer became the latest programme to claim the coveted title after storming the streaming platform, presenting the terrifying true tale of lead performer Richard Gadd’s stalker experience.
But suppose that isn’t enough to persuade you. In that case, the few we’ve chosen have also received excellent marks from the crowd, putting them in the unique position of being unanimously praised by experts and professional binge-watchers. Let’s get to it.
Giri/Haji
The gripping criminal thriller first broadcast on the BBC before becoming available on Netflix in 2020, reaching a worldwide audience.
It follows Tokyo detective Kenzo Mori as he searches for his brother, who is presumed dead after killing the nephew of a yakuza member. The hunt takes Kenzo further and deeper into London’s dark underground.
Incredibly, despite getting 100% with Rotten Tomatoes reviewers and 88% with the fans, it was discontinued after only one incredibly successful series.
Baby Reindeer
The most recent addition to the list, Baby Reindeer, sees a failing comic become the target of a fragile woman’s stalker fixation, forcing him to confront both the anguish it brings and the traumas he had sought to leave behind.
Richard Gadd wrote and performed it, reenacting and exposing the horrific events that occurred in his life.
More than 10 million hours were utilised over the platform’s first four days of operation.
The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping
The true crime documentary series delves at the lives of students at the Academy at Ivy Ridge, a US disciplinary institution promoted as a boarding school.
They reflect on the allegedly harsh situations that compelled them to endure, as well as the long-term damage that resulted.
The series premiered last month and has received a 90% rating from viewers.
Spotless
Jean Bastière has a beautiful life with Julie, their two children, and a booming company cleaning crime scenes.
But everything comes crumbling down when his criminal brother, Martin, reappears in his life and seeks for aid in covering up a murder.
In order to protect his family, Jean becomes involved in criminal activity and jeopardises his own future.
House of Ninjas
A family of ninjas known as shinobi had abandoned their lives. However, a rising threat drives them to take action yet again.
Despite one significant critique, it debuted in February to excellent reviews. Fans criticised the show’s soundtrack, claiming it does not mesh with the plot and ‘nearly wrecked the whole series’.
The good news is, it wasn’t enough to stop anyone from bingeing it all (they still scored it 89%), and now we’re curious as to how horrible the music can get…
Cunk on Earth
A true change of pace, more suited to people searching for a chuckle.
Philomena Cunk, a fictional documentary filmmaker, strives to narrate some of the most significant tales in our planet’s history, interviewing specialists along the way who try to answer some very weird questions while maintaining a straight face for the cameras.
The Confession Killer
The Confession Killer is a true crime series with a unique twist.
While the hunt for a prominent killer generally keeps us interested, this one focuses on the case of Henry Lee Lucas, who was more than prepared to confess to more than 200 killings in the United States – only to discover that they were falsehoods. But why did he do this?
The Letdown
Finally, a lighter entry to take us away from the crime and murder.
The Letdown captures the ups and downs of being a new mom with comedic truth, following Audrey as she joins a support group to navigate parenting.
It’s one of the highest-rated shows on the site, receiving 100% from reviewers and 94% from the public at home throughout two seasons.
