Susanna Reid was applauded and commended online for how she handled a ‘darling’ studio visitor on Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain.
Tracey Mallaghan, an activist, was asked into the show to dispute the protestor who tossed orange confetti at George Osborne and Thea Rogers as they exited the church on Saturday.
‘You look excellent in orange @George_Osborne – congrats to the newlyweds,’ tweeted environmental organisation Just Stop Oil with video footage of the event.
Mallaghan, an Insulate Britain campaigner, said she would have declined the invitation to throw confetti over the newlyweds, but only because nonviolence was important to her, and she couldn’t promise she wouldn’t have’slapped’ the former chancellor as well.
She also claimed that Osborne was “really responsible for a lot of terrible media messaging” on climate change, asking confused-looking co-host Ed Balls, who was shadow chancellor for Labour for four years and is set to launch an economics podcast with Osborne, “Do you not know that, Ed?”
Mallaghan subsequently informed him that he needed to do “a little of heavy leading,” prompting Susanna, a longstanding ITV presenter, to jump in and urge, “Go ahead, tell us what happened?”
‘What happened with what, darling?’ Mallaghan then responded.
After the briefest of pauses, and with a little laugh, Susanna hit back with: ‘Sorry, you don’t need to call me darling.’
Mallaghan then defended her use of the endearment by saying she was ‘working class’, before the discussion continued.
This woman is so rude on the tv – ‘darling’… how condescending #GMB

However, many viewers complimented Susanna for promptly responding to the statement and shutting it down, since the guest was labelled ‘condescending’ and ‘patronising’.
‘You don’t need to call me darling! Well said Susanna that made me giggle,’ tweeted one audience member, as another added: ‘“Sorry, don’t call me ‘Darling”. You tell her @susannareid100!!!’
Another said they were ‘loving the argument this morning’, while a different person quoted Susanna’s retort and added fire emoji.
‘“Sorry Darling” Suzie did not like that. Love Reid’s Response [sic] #GMB,’ posted another fan.
‘The horror on don’t call me DARLING Susanna’s face was brilliant, absolutely made my day,’ shared someone else, adding the hashtag ‘#dontcallmedarling’.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
