Maya Jama is the host of Love Island, but she has never been on the show.
The 28-year-old seems confident when she walks into the villa to tell people about breakups and reunions, but she doesn’t think she has the guts to be a contestant.
During a cover interview with Vogue magazine, she explained her reasoning.
‘I would not be able to, at any age, strut out of the house in a bikini in front of men that are judging me based on just one sentence and what I look like,’ she stated. We somehow don’t think she’d struggle to attract willing partners!
She then praised the islands for putting themselves out there on the ITV dating show to find love.
‘The confidence of the people that go on! They’ve got a different kind of juice.’
She might not be able to stand in a bikini in front of possible mates on TV, but she did take it off for the stunning Vogue shot.
Maya also wore clothes from designers like Prada, JW Anderson, Miu Mui, and Valentino in the pictures taken by Steven Meisel.
During the conversation, Maya talked briefly about her own love life and how people were interested in her relationships, like when she broke up with Australian basketball player Ben Simmons, 26.
‘I’ve never really offered up my personal life, I’ve just done my job and that’s kind of come with it,’ she explained.
Maya also dated rapper Stormzy, 29, from 2015 to 2019. Vogue describes their love story as ‘a flagship partnership that reflected youthful hope in the aftermath of the racially tense Brexit vote’.
‘None of us really knew the level of importance it held to a certain group of people, us being together,’ Maya recalled.
‘We were both super ambitious. We were both from similar upbringings and we were both just little grafters that have made something good of ourselves.’
