As she gave her final report on Friday afternoon, Martine Croxall said it was the “greatest privilege” to have transmitted on the BBC News channel.
The presenter is one of several newsreaders who have been let go as BBC News and BBC World News prepare to combine on Monday.
Martine thanked fans in a video posted to Twitter as she waved farewell. ‘As you are presumably aware, a singular press operation will be with you beginning Monday,’ she explained.
‘From my happy spot, Studio E, I’m signing off from the BBC News Channel in its present incarnation.
‘It has been an honour to transmit to you from here all this time. Thank you for coming.’
Although it has not been stated where or when viewers can expect to see Martine again, she is still hired by the BBC and has teased audiences to “watch this space.”
Many people thanked Martine and wished her success in her future endeavours as they reacted to her film online.
One wrote: ‘It has been a treat to listen to you. You are the consummate professional and a brilliant broadcaster.
‘I hope that you will continue to present news bulletins after the new channel launches. However, whatever you do I wish you every success in the future.’
‘Really liked your reports, Martine, full of verve and sparkle and, when required, seriousness and compassion,’ said another. We hope to be able to listen in to whatever you do next.’
Last July, it was revealed that BBC News and BBC World News would merge to form a unified 24-hour TV programme.
The cutbacks are part of a cost-cutting strategy following Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries’ announcement that the licencing charge would be frozen for the next two years.
