Sir Tony Robinson is apparently working on a remake of his classic children’s comedy Maid Marian And Her Merry Men.
The BBC children’s hit premiered in 1989 and lasted four seasons until 1994.
The musical comedy reimagined the narrative of Robin Hood, with Maid Marian leading the Merry Men, and it was a huge success, winning a Bafta, an RTS award, and the Prix Jeunesse Variety Award at the International Children’s Programme Festival in Munich.
Kate Lonergan played the leader, while Adam Morris played Robin in the original series.
According to rumours, series creator Sir Tony – who also portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham in the show – intends to resurrect the show.
‘A company I have worked with before has bought the rights to Maid Marian And Her Merry Men from me,’ the 76-year-old said.
‘We are in the process of creating a version of the original for television,’ he added to The Sun.
The first season was first published on VHS before being broadcast on CBBC in 2002; it has subsequently been broadcast on CBBC and Gold in subsequent years.
Sir Tony previously said about the show’s success: ‘I performed a few of Comic Cons with the Maid Marian company and they were a big smash.
‘We had a whole day of mums who had enjoyed the series as girls bringing their own kids along so we knew there was something there.’
He continued: ‘Originally I was going to play Robin Hood but we decided to make him good-looking in a ghastly, daft, floppy-haired way.
‘I’d been playing a cute character for so long that I wanted a change and I realised that if you play the baddie you can control the pace of a show. Plus, bad guys have more fun!’
Maid Marian & Her Merry Men is available to stream on ITVX.
