Katy Perry has been chastised for tormenting American Idol hopefuls in order to add drama to the ABC show.
Katy was entrusted with alerting some of the top 24 singers that they had advanced to the next round on Sunday night’s broadcast.
The 38-year-old took use of the situation to build anticipation, informing some of the aspiring musicians that they would not be competing.
She told one talented performer Nutsa Buzaladze: ‘We have really appreciated you being in this competition and we did not put you in the Top 24.’
An upset Nutsa told the judge that it was ‘okay’ before trickster Katy added: ‘You put yourself in that top 24. Nutsa, you put yourself in that top 24 with your incredible talent!’
A confused Nutsa naturally needed some further explanation, which Katy provided telling her: ‘We didn’t put you in there, you did. As confusing as it seems you’re going to the top 24!’
When Katy informed Zachariah Smith that he had also made it from the top 48 to the top 24, she employed a similar strategy.
‘You will be going home,’ she told the artist. Once again she provided a happy plot twist by continuing with: ‘To pack your bags to come back to the top 24!’
Fans reacted instantly on social media to Katy’s distinctive delivery.
One person wrote: ‘If they didn’t have trauma before, they do now with @katyperry delivering top 24 news. Lol.’
Another added: ‘Is it just me or does it bug anyone else that Katy Perry keeps trolling people about whether they made it to the top 24 or not? I feel it’s cruel to make them think they aren’t going through….. and then say, Yeah, you made it!’
However, some people enjoyed her communication style.
One person wrote: ‘My favorite part of American idol top #24 reveal is Katy Perry messing with people before telling them they’re in and using phrases that makes them think they’re not in.’
At the very least, she wasn’t telling individuals who were leaving that they were staying – that would be cruel!
The singers proceeded in the competition after passing the Showstoppers round, which required them to perform for the first time with a live band.
Now that they’ve made it to the top 24, it will be up to the American public, rather than the judges, to determine who stays in the competition.
Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan join Katy on the panel.
American Idol airs on ABC in the US.
