*Warning: Succession spoilers ahead*
Brian Cox addressed the stunning Succession death in the current season four episode, and revealed when he found out about Logan Roy’s fate.
The episode began innocently enough, with the siblings coming together for Connor Roy’s (Alan Ruck) wedding to Willa Ferreyra (Justine Lupe), but it swiftly deteriorated into sorrow for the family when they learned that their father had gotten dangerously ill on board his private jet.
It was left to Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) to keep Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) updated and give them all the opportunity to say their final goodbyes over a devastating phone call that ended with the knowledge that he had died.
In a recent interview, Brian, 76, delves into the difficult moments, hinting that this isn’t the last we’ll see of the Roy patriarch.
When asked if there was any ‘goodbye’ moment with the cast after it had been filmed, he replied: ‘I do pop back and I have a couple scenes later on, which is flashback stuff. But I didn’t really see the cast very much. I suppose the last big thing we did together was a retake of the karaoke. There, Logan really says, to me, the truest line in the show: “I love you, but you’re not serious people.”
‘Once I’m gone, I’m gone. It was hard to keep a secret all that time. It was a long time. When did I die? God, I think it was last July.
‘From one sense, it is [a relief]. I’m very proud of myself because I’ve never been able to keep secrets and this is one secret I actually did rather well on.’
Brian found out of his character’s death right before the start of season four, with creator Jesse Armstrong confirming that the third episode would be his final.
He revealed the moment Logan died and how filming went down, saying it was a ‘careful’ period on set.
‘We had to be very careful about giving away the game. I came in three episodes later [than when the rest of the episode was filmed] to do the death thing, and I didn’t do anything. I just lay there and had the phone by my ear,’ he added to Vulture.
‘That’s why I think there was a very strong contention and very strong reason to think that maybe he’s not dead at all. Maybe it’s all a ruse! If you think about it, the last image is a body bag. Anybody could be in that body bag … There’s a possibility.’
Fans were left speechless after the riveting show, and they found themselves in sorrow for the Roy family’s patriarch, while also demanding awards for all performers involved.
However, some astute viewers noticed a hint in the season four poster that seemed to reveal his destiny all along.
The Roy family may be seen standing on the balcony of a skyscraper in the promo, with the New York cityscape visible in the building’s reflection.
A plane was seen in the clouds above them, which few people noticed at first, and it appears to have been a teaser for what was to come.
Succession airs on HBO Max on Sundays in the US, and is available to stream on NOW in the UK.
