According to reports, the Ibiza Weekender has been cancelled, and filming will no longer take place later this year.
The ITV2 reality programme, which followed vacation reps and revellers in some of Europe’s most popular party hotspots, including Ibiza, Magaluf, and Kavos, will not return, leaving the cast ‘gutted’.
‘The cast were recently informed that planned filming later this year has now been cancelled and the show won’t be coming back. They’re all gutted as many of them have been on it for years and it’s always been such a popular format,’ an insider told The Sun.
According to reports, the decision was taken because of the approaching return of Big Brother and the influence the show will have on television schedules.
‘ITV2 have had to make some difficult decisions with the return of Big Brother taking up a big portion of the schedule later in the year, and it looks like the Weekender series is one of those casualties,’ the source added.
And there is still potential for a return one day, as Big Brother’s own comeback demonstrated.
The insider said: ‘Obviously in telly land shows can always be resurrected, so it’s not necessarily gone forever, but for the foreseeable future it’s off the cards.’
ITV hyped up the show’s comeback earlier this year, promising more “romances and tongue-in-cheek adventures.”
‘The programme guarantees the ups and downs, romances and tongue-in-cheek adventures of a holiday in one of the nation’s favourite holiday hotspots,’ the broadcaster said.
Meanwhile, while production was still slated for later this year, executives characterised Kavos as a “perfect destination.”
Satmohan Panesar, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment said at the time: ‘We’ve missed the high jinks of our reps and holidaymakers – Kavos is the perfect destination to get back to the party.’
