The Last of Us producers have suggested that the post-apocalyptic thriller may stretch beyond a second season.
The US TV series, starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, follows Ellie and Joel as they journey throughout North America 20 years after a horrific zombie epidemic.
The first season of The Last of Us, based on the highly acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name, debuted in January and lasted nine episodes.
Fans and reviewers alike lauded the series, with many hailing it as one of the best video game TV adaptations ever done.
A second season based on the events of the sequel game The Last of Us 2 has been promised for the following two years.
Despite the fact that there is currently no third The Last of Us game, the show’s creator, Craig Mazin, 52, has suggested that more episodes will follow.
According to The Independent, Mazin, who previously developed the drama series Chernobyl, stated, ‘Our intention is to do it not just for one more season. We’ll be here for a while.’
Mazin was speaking at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, and he guaranteed that there is still ‘quite a bit more narrative to tell’.
His remarks come after Bella Ramsey stated that production for season two may not begin until later this year, implying a longer wait than anticipated.
Speaking to Johnathan Ross, Ramsey, 19, said: ‘It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.’
Reviewing the series for Metro.co.uk, Josh Stephenson said: ‘The Last Of Us, then, is more than a decent adaptation of a very good video game.’
He continued: ‘It is, at times, every bit the spiritual successor to Chernobyl in showing the damage humanity can do to one another.’
Bella Ramsey made headlines earlier this month when she confessed that she enjoys eating porridge with orange juice.
On The Graham Norton Show, the former Game of Thrones actor explained: ‘There once wasn’t milk I could drink, there wasn’t oat milk or almond milk, so I just tried orange juice on it. Years ago! And I loved it.’
The Last of Us is available to stream on NOW.
