Denise Welch celebrated an important milestone today: she is 11 years clean.
On the ITV show Loose Women, the 64-year-old celebrated her remarkable success with her Loose Women colleagues.
The topic came up as Denise was talking about her friendships after Jesy Nelson revealed she doesn’t talk to her ex Little Mix bandmates.
‘I’m 11 years sober today,’ Denise nonchalantly stated mid-discussion.
Janet Street-Porter, Kaye Adams, and Brenda Edwards did not let the opportunity pass them by; instead, they enthusiastically applauded the entry.
Denise softly smiled and soaked in the moment after the spontaneous clapping from the panellists and the audience.
‘When I used to drink, they used to call me the Pied Piper of Soho.’
Explaining how she got the nickname she said: ‘I used to gravitate all these people and hangers-on, so it was quite nice to do a cull when that [sobriety] happened.’
Denise also stated that, while she has ended certain friendships, she still enjoys meeting new people.
‘I’ve got my close friends, but I do like meeting lots of acquaintances.’
Denise celebrated ten years with side-by-side images and a profoundly personal statement on how her life has improved.
She also stated that she is ‘happier and healthier’ in her 60s than she was 20 years ago.
The soap star commented on the differences she could see in her eyes after sharing two photos of her face from before she quit drinking and today.
‘Got a few more lines and wrinkles but it’s in the eyes. They have it.
‘10 yrs ago today I took my last alcoholic drink. Not a sherry trifle since and it’s been the best decision I ever made. It changed my life and the lives of everyone I love and who loves me.’
Her prior connection with booze, according to the TV personality, was “destructive.” Denise chose to stop drinking when her partner Lincoln Townley, whom she married in 2013, recovered from alcoholism.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
