Inside No. 9 viewers were duped yet again by the BBC drama’s writers, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, following a mind-bending twist with Lee Mack.
The anthology series, which will end after season 9 next year, aired its newest episode on the Line of Duty network on Thursday, and it’s safe to say it wasn’t what viewers were expecting.
Viewers had gathered at home to see Hold On Tight, a film set on a bus and starring Robin Askwith that had been pushed on social media by The League of Gentlemen actors.
However, just seconds before the programme was to begin, an announcer said that there had been a last-minute change in the schedule and that instead of Inside No. 9, a game show starring Lee, 54, would air.
The comedian then presented 3 By 3, a game show with nine competitors that first looked to be a typical game show – until things took a sinister turn.
Fans were shocked to learn that 3 By 3 was, in reality, an Inside No. 9 episode all along.

One shocked viewer simply wrote: ‘Omg #insideno9 totally got me,’ while another added: ‘Wow, well I’m never ever going to look at any quiz show the same way after that. I’m going to think somethings gonna go wrong every time The Chase is on!!’

Many others also expressed their shock at the twist, with one branding it ‘mindblowing’ and joked it had left their ‘brain shattered.’
Reece and Steve have stated that the most popular idea they receive from aspiring Inside No. 9 writers is an episode centred on a double-decker bus.
It became such a ‘in-joke’ that the two claimed they would reconsider for season 8, although it is unclear whether it will ever appear. Who knows what else they have in their sleeves…
