Greg Rutherford has sent an update to his supporters on his recuperation following his abrupt withdrawal from Dancing On Ice due to a’significant’ injury.
In an Instagram Story post, the former Olympian stated that he was’sewn up’ following his mishap.
He posted a photo of himself in bed with the caption: ‘Recovery sort of starts now… After a terrible first night, I’m looking forward to having things organised and patched up so I can return to normal.
‘Thank you everyone so much for your warm messages.’
Greg suffered an injury just hours before the Dancing On Ice final, which saw Ryan Thomas and his partner Amani Fancy win with ease.
His skating partner Vanessa James wrote on Instagram: ‘Unfortunately Greg has sustained a significant injury this morning at rehearsals and won’t be able to perform tonight.
‘We are on our way to the hospital for Greg to get examined further and receive the treatment he needs.’
Greg’s fiancée, Susie Verrill, subsequently reported that Greg was in resuscitation in the hospital, a procedure used for patients who require immediate care.
‘Resus is never a fun place to be is it. There’s a lot of screaming (Not from Greg),’ she wrote, showing Greg lying on a bed with his eyes closed.
The former Olympic gold medal winner shared a video from his hospital bed in resus, paying tribute to Ryan, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire in the Dancing On Ice final.
‘But my message for the three incredible finalists who will be skating shortly is to have an incredible night,’ he said, adding that he was ‘devastated’ that he couldn’t take part.
Following Ryan’s victory, Greg posted on his Instagram Story that his fellow opponent was a ‘friend for life’.
‘So prouyd of @ryanthomas84. He’s had his fair share of ups and downs during this process, so to come out winning is utterly spectacular,’ he wrote.
‘Well done brother, I’m glad I’ve got a friend for life in you.’
The Dancing On Ice social media channels previously announced Greg’s departure from the show in a statement, which read: ‘Sadly Olympian Greg Rutherford MBE has had to withdraw from Dancing On Ice after sustaining an injury whilst in rehearsals for the final episode of the current series.
‘Greg and Vanessa have been such a popular couple this series and have performed some truly memorable routines.
‘We will be helping to support Greg and wish him well with his recovery. We also want to thank him for being such a treasured member of the Dancing on Ice family.’
During Sunday night’s programme, while Greg was mentioned and well-wishes were sent his way, details of his injury were not shared with the public.
Dancing On Ice is available to watch on ITVX.
