Phoenix was ultimately unmasked and revealed to be Ricky Wilson on Saturday’s Masked Singer.
The announcement came as a surprise to many people since they were under the impression that Phoenix was actually David Tennant. One of those people was the judge Davina McCall, who made two wrong guesses that the Doctor Who actor was hiding behind the mask.
After the big reveal over the past weekend, Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky made an appearance on Loose Women on Monday to chat about his time on the show. During their conversation, Ricky said that David had texted him, wondering who Phoenix was.
When asked whether he was surprised that judge Rita Ora didn’t guess his identity seeing as they’d worked together on The Voice, 45-year-old Ricky said: ‘No. She was the one I wanted to fool the most.’
He added: ‘I wasn’t even thinking about people at home, I just wanted to get past Rita.’
Proving how well he’d managed to fool people, the rocker then added: ‘David [Tennant] actually texted me and said, “are you the Phoenix?”’
Speaking to the Loose Women panel, Ricky also shared an insight into just how secretive The Masked Singer process is, explaining: ‘The fitting was in the middle of nowhere. It was so secret. It was in a church hall.’
He added: ‘They keep you in a portacabin. I just watched Law and Order on TV. I was like, “this is the best job I’ve ever had”.’
Nonetheless, the crooner added that he still got nervous whenever he performed on stage, even if he was wrapped up in a big costume.
‘I’ve heard people say it’s quite freeing, but I found it nerve-racking. It was no different for me, I knew I had to do a good job.’
Rita was clearly taken aback by the reveal on Saturday, and she was cursing herself for the fact that she had no idea that Ricky had been masquerading as Phoenix all along.
‘I’m never going to forgive you ever again,’ she joked.
‘If you sang how you sing, I would have got you in a second,’ she added.
While some people were certain that David was performing as Phoenix, others placed their bets on Joe Sugg, Nicolas Hoult, Alfie Allen, Sid Owen, and even Paddy McGuinness.
