Dancing On Ice contestant Ria Hebden has revealed a gruesome injury she suffered years ago contributed to a huge fear ahead of signing up.
Ria impressed fans in her first week of the competition, scoring a respectable 24.5 points alongside her partner Łukasz Różycki.
However, the pair landed in the bottom two despite their impressive routine, and are hoping to be saved in the second live show this Sunday.
Chatting ahead of week two, Ria revealed a fear she had to overcome when she first started learning to skate after slipping on a wet floor years ago.
On what she was most scared of, Ria said: ‘For me, it’s skating forwards at speed just because I slipped on a wet floor years ago, headfirst on concrete and it was honestly like the most awful thing.
‘I ended up splitting my lip having to have 12 stitches having root canal surgery on my two front teeth. So you know, the trauma of that I know how painful it is to fall flat on your face on the concrete.
‘So when I first started learning how to skate, I was really honest with the coaches about that fear, and I think that was the best approach because then they were able to support me in feeling safe.’
Ria was taught ‘how to fall safely’ and help build up her confidence on the ice and overcome her fears.
She explained: ‘What’s just been really interesting about this, is they were always very honest from the beginning, saying, “Look, you will fall so let’s teach you how to fall safely, so you don’t fear it.”
‘Because you need to fall because that’s how you learn and it’s something when you think about it in life, right?’
She added: ‘You can’t fear failing at things because if you do that, then you stop yourself from fully trying.
‘It’s been an enlightening experience actually, learning to let go of the fear of falling and actually lean leaning into this sort of fear because that’s where the growth happens!’
Chatting to us on her one day off, Ria described skating as ‘one of the most physically and mentally challenging things I’ve ever done’ as she gears up to perform in the skate-off.
The TV presenter shared: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever had to fully immerse myself in something in this way before but I but I’m loving it, I feel so fit. I also feel really productive.
‘It’s really weird because even though it’s very physically tough and taxing, using all your muscles and you’re constantly focused because you need to, be aware and upright because you’re on the ice.
‘You think you’d be shattered afterwards, but you’re actually really switched on like I find them really productive when I come home from training.’
She encouraged anyone looking to get fit to try their hand at skating, concluding: ‘I’m definitely getting very fit, if you want to get fit, ice skating is the way to go!’
Viewers will have to tune in on Sunday to see if Ria manage to make it through to another week in the competition – but we’ve got our fingers firmly crossed.
