Sunday night was the premiere of Channel 4’s new game show Rise and Fall, and some are already finding it uncomfortable to watch.
From the creators of The Traitors, this series examines what it takes to reach the top, including “how to win power, how to preserve it, and how to use it to influence others.”
In the first episode, the sixteen candidates were separated into two groups: Rulers and Grafters. The Rulers wasted little time putting their minions to work in order to increase the prize amount.
Yet as if being helpless and living in poverty weren’t horrible enough, a cruel surprise revealed that only Rulers can win the money.
In the first episode of the series, the Grafters worked as electricians and were charged with ‘fixing a broken powerline’ by holding parts over their heads for a set amount of time.
In addition, the circuit could not be interrupted for more than five seconds, and the powerlines were live, meaning that if they came apart, they would suffer an electric shock.
Despite the fact that the entire prize pool might have reached $15,000, the game was called off after the Grafters collected a respectable £6,000.
Several viewers were unnerved by the dystopian nature of the new Channel 4 broadcast, and they were ready to express their opinions.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: ‘I had to turn #riseandfall off. It’s horrible. And it’s far too close to the way this country is actually run to be entertaining…’
Another asked: ‘Is it just me, or is there something truly vile about watching people watching people getting ever-increasing electric shocks in order to earn prize money?’
Thirdly, “#riseandfall seems like the type of television you would anticipate after 12 years of Tory rule.”
Some, though, adored the atmosphere of the programme. Already hooked on #riseandfall!! Like a combination of Big Bro and The Circle! ‘I adore it!’
On Monday’s episode two of Rise and Fall, a Ruler will be eliminated from the game and a Grafter will be offered the chance to ascend.
Rise and Fall continues on Monday at 10pm on Channel 4.
