Katy Perry’s’mum-shaming’ of an American Idol competitor during her audition has left the participant devastated.
Sara Beth Liebe joined up to compete in the long-running reality singing competition on last week’s programme.
Yet a statement made before she even began outraged lots of folks watching on at home.
Sara revealed ahead of her performance that she had three children at the age of 25, shocking Katy and screaming, ‘Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much!’
Sara stated she was going to ‘pass out’ if Katy sat on the judge’s table as the singer stood up to express her surprise that Sara was a mother-of-three.
But, the artist has since stated that she was humiliated by the remark aimed at her.
In a TikTok video captioned ‘Well I didn’t think I’d be making this video but I just wanted to say a couple of things since I’m being flooded with articles, comments and messages about this’, Sara Beth began by saying it was an ‘interesting video to be filming’.
‘Recently I auditioned on American Idol you may or may not have seen and while I was on the show there was a joke that was made that has gotten some attention and I’ve got a lot of people reaching out to me asking how I’m feeling and I figured this was probably the easiest way to address it,’ she said.
She began by detailing how she was scouted to audition for the show and perform in front of judges Lionel Ritchie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry.
‘At the start of my audition before I sang, I mentioned that I had three young children and was a young mother and Katy Perry made a joke that wasn’t super kind…I don’t really have too much to say about my feelings on it because I feel like it’s probably pretty self-explanatory,’ she said.
‘It was embarrassing to have that on TV and it was hurtful, and you know that’s that.’
Sara Beth added mum-shaming was ‘super lame’ and that ‘I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool’.
‘Keep loving your babies…because nobody deserves to feel crappy about that.’
Sara Beth was hesitant about whether a job in the music industry was her ‘dream’ during her audition, prompting Katy to urge her to perform another song after her first was deemed ‘not enough’.
‘Show us what your voice can do. Take it to the limit. No looking back. Sing it like it’s your new dream,’ she said.
After performing Bennie and the Jets, Katy and Luke sent Sara Beth through to the next round, however Lionel voted no and told her to ‘take it seriously’.
