The last trailer for Renfield has been released, bringing us an even bigger scrumptious meal of Nicolas Cage and his wonderfully devilish take on Dracula before the film’s premiere next month.
Dracula transforms into a swarm of bats, Dracula bears his fangs as he moves in for the kill, and Dracula wears a lot of pretty fancy costumes.
The Prince of Darkness’ devoted servant Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) is the focus of this modern monster tale directed by Chris McKay, which looks at the tortured assistant to history’s most egotistical employer as Renfield strives to break free.
Renfield has been forced to obtain his master’s prey and perform his every bidding, no matter how heinous.
But now, after years of slavery, Renfield is ready to discover whether there is life outside Dracula’s shadow – if only he can figure out how to break free from his co-dependency.
The new caravan shows the beginning of their professional connection as Dracula meets his soon-to-be dogsbody.
‘Mr Renfield, welcome. I am Dracula,’ Cage proclaims with all the theatricality and cape swishing you could hope for.
‘You will make a very good assistant,’ he adds, before, um, exploding a Catholic bishop that is trying to save Renfield as a member of ‘the most trusted institution on earth’.
Decades later, Renfield is even more dissatisfied with his continued duty to the vampire king, and one night finds up utilising his magical abilities to assist thwart an armed raid on a pub, where he meets Awkwafina’s police officer.
He is then seen describing his profession – and employer – to her, while Cage’s Dracula, through whom he sought to pay tribute to Sir Christopher Lee’s Hammer Horror film performances, is portrayed in a fear and violence montage as the picture pushes towards gore.
‘Some call me the Dark Lord, others the Lord of Death,’ Dracula explains to his captive audience, holding his hand (complete with pointer fingernails, naturally) to his mouth in a dramatic gasp.
Renfield ultimately confronts his master, informing him that he deserves happiness, which does not go over well.
‘You deserve only suffering! I will unleash an army of death. Everyone you are about will suffer because you betrayed me,’ Dracula declares, while swiping at individuals and revelling in the aftermath of a bloody feast.
Meanwhile, Renfield and his new police partner join forces to try to stop the vampire before it’s too late – but will it be too late?
The trailer ends in a flurry of gory violence as they do battle with a gang of armed attackers, one of which Renfield kills by ripping off his arms as he kicks him in the chest.
‘You know when something crazy happens and someone’s like, “It’s okay, I’ve seen way worse”? Everything I saw you do today is going to be my “way worse”,’ shares Awkwafina, in an entirely understandable statement.
Renfield is set to release in cinemas on April 14, 2023.
