We all know that the point of wearing sunglasses is to protect our eyes from harmful UV rays. But at some stage during the last few years, we started to shun sensible sunnies for stylish microshades. Teeny sunglasses might look great for the ‘gram but it only takes wearing them on a bright day to realise that super slender frames aren’t particularly useful for keeping the sun’s powerful rays at bay.
Thankfully, the fashion tide seems to be turning, with a new wave of oversized sunnies making their way into stores. The polar opposite of sleek shades, these larger-than-life styles offer adequate sun protection while still looking chic. Enormous sunglasses have always been favoured in stylish circles but this season designers are turning to the ’70s for inspiration, with thick frames and colourful lenses taking over our feeds.
Heavy rimmed aviators in particular are causing a stir, with everyone from Dua Lipa to Emma Chamberlain rocking the retro shades in a variety of tints. Large square frames are enjoying a moment too, with Studio 54-style sunglasses dominating Gucci’s and Loewe’s collections. If you’re after more of a sporty style, wraparound visor-style shades are also on trend this season (and a permanent favourite of A-listers like Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid).
So if you’re searching for a pair of oversized sunnies to wear while you sip your Aperol Spritz this summer, scroll below..
