James Whale has revealed that he does not expect he will be alive this time next year since his cancer treatments are ‘not working.’
Whale, 72, was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had a kidney removed in 2000. He stated in 2020 that it had progressed to his spine, brain, and lungs.
Since then, the TalkTV host has stated that his cancer treatments are “not working” and that he is “kind of at the end” of his treatment choices.
Whale was at the Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) awards this weekend with his wife Nadine Lamont-Brown, whom he married in 2021, when he claimed he will die in 2024.
However, he approached the matter with his characteristic humour, stating, ‘When I drop a lot more weight when I am very sick, I’ll look magnificent,’ according to The Mirror.
He then provided an update on his cancer treatment, noting that he had stopped taking steroids that caused him to appear like a “balloon.”
‘I’ve just come off all the steroids I was on, which made me look like a bloody balloon. I’m feeling better from that,’ he continued.
‘The cancer gets into your head and sometimes you can’t stand noise. At the moment, I have got cancer fatigue, which makes you very tired.
‘Some days I might feel sorry for myself. I feel sorry for my wife really. It’s more difficult for her.’
His wife Nadine subsequently stated that the broadcaster had been participating in a therapeutic experiment, but that it had’stopped functioning,’ implying that he would discontinue that therapy.
‘He’s had all the possible treatments, he’s on a clinical trial but we’re probably going to be winding up on that quite soon. It’s stopped working,’ she said.
According to the magazine, while he had pondered assisted suicide in a Swiss facility, he would instead spend his final days at home with his family.
Medlina, Whale’s first wife, died in 2018 after being diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. They were married for 48 years and had two boys.
