Fans of You will rejoice today, as Volume I of the fourth installment is available on Netflix!
It wouldn’t be You if serial murderer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) didn’t have a new location and a new name, as season four follows the creepy stalker as he switches America for a new existence over the water in London.
Despite assuming a new identity as college lecturer Jonathan Moore…. the adage “old habits die hard” rings true.
Before we become acquainted with Joe… Let’s look back at the explosive events in season three that led in Joe’s new life overseas, I mean Jonathan’s (so difficult to keep up with) new crew.
Brace yourselves, this is going to be a rocky journey!
What happened in You season 3?
Season 3 began with Joe and Love embarking on a new and murder-free life together in Madre Linda.
Things aren’t going well for the new parents as they try to rekindle their romance while caring for baby Henry Forty Quinn Goldberg.
Devoted followers will recall that Joe, being Joe, was already eyeing another woman… their neighbour Natalie Engler (Michaela McManus).
Despite their mutual interest, Joe immediately rejects her overtures after vowing to be a better man for his kid, and despite his wife’s assurances that nothing transpired between the two of them, Love leads Natalie into the basement of the bakery she purchased and murders her.
That concludes the first episode; please stick with us!
Natalie’s husband Matthew (Scott Speedman) organised a large search party for his’missing’ wife once the public attention around her absence became more intense.
Natalie’s abduction is blamed on another of Love’s slain victims, Gil (Mackenzie Astin), an anti-vaxxer whose children infected Henry with measles.
Natalie and Gil were having an affair, and Gil killed Natalie and then himself, according to Love and Joe’s clever plot. This story, however, was insufficient for Matthew, who became suspicious of his unusual neighbours.
Joe and Love appear to be living in suburban paradise months after the Natalie/Gill affair, but Joe finds himself in hot trouble when he begins having lewd dreams about his employer Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle).
Joe becomes further engaged with his coworker while she is embroiled in a custody dispute with her ex, Ryan Goodwin (Scott Michael Foster).
After the two ultimately admit their emotions for one another, Joe considers the safest method to dissolve his marriage to Love so that he may pursue Marienne, while all the while, Love was playing about with Matthew’s stepson Theo (Dylan Arnold).
But things become tricky when Love’s BFF Cherry Conrad (Shalita Grant) and her husband Cary (Travis Van Winkle) end themselves confined in Joe’s distinctive cage after discovering Love murdered Natalie.
Marienne begs Joe to be a witness while Ryan takes her to court to prevent her from going to Paris with their daughter Juliette.
When Joe realises there is no end in sight to Ryan’s agony, he handles the problem in true Joe fashion… he murders him.
In the last episode, What Is Love, Joe and Love finally confront what has been bothering them, and Joe confesses his wish for divorce.
Naturally, Love misinterpreted his request and poisoned Joe, leaving him half paralysed.
After confronting Marienne about her romance with Joe, Love has a sudden change of heart and feels that Joe is the issue, not her.
Love sharpens a butcher knife to cut Joe’s neck as soon as Marienne and her daughter depart, but Joe promptly injects Love’s leg with the same medicine she poisoned him with, rendering her immobile.
Joe later writes a message to Marienne’s coworker Dante (Ben Mehl), requesting that he and his spouse look after Henry. He then returns to the house and makes Love’s death appear accidental by setting fire to the house and chopping off two of his toes to make it appear as though she killed herself after murdering him.
The final few minutes show Matthew and Theo repairing their tense relationship, while Cherry and Conrad openly discussed their hostage experience.
Joe is shown at a coffee shop, and as soon as he steps outside, we realise he has arrived in Paris, Marienne’s favourite city.
