While examining a deadly shark attack at a renowned tourist destination, a team of experts found a rather horrifying finding.
A new BBC programme airing Tuesday night investigates the surge in shark attacks despite a significant fall in shark population.
A Russian tourist was attacked to death by a tiger shark in the Red Sea in front of his father while filming the show in June 2023.
On July 2, 2022, not far from the current incident, the Sahl Hasheesh resort was packed with vacationers, with hundreds splashing in the Mediterranean when Elisabeth Sauer, 68, was bitten while snorkelling in shallow water less than two metres deep.
She managed to swim back to shore despite her injuries, but she died in an ambulance before reaching the nearest hospital. More than 40 individuals stood powerless on the jetty.
Authorities then closed off the beach for three days to investigate, but the BBC documentary depicts the terrifying moment researchers uncovered the worst discovery possible.
They discovered the dismembered bones of another swimmer a few hundred metres down the bay, but there were no witnesses this time.
Roxana Donisan, 44, a Romanian tourist who had been travelling alone and hadn’t been seen by her hotel employees in more than a day, was recognised from the bones.
‘They had to analyse two occurrences and determine which came first,’ stated Ralph Collier of the Shark Research Institute, who claims to have examined more shark attack victims than anybody else on the globe.
‘Now they had a big jigsaw puzzle they had to put together.’
It was clear however, from examining the remains of Donisan, it was ‘obvious she had been in the water for some time.’
‘This was a feeding event,’ said Collier. ‘This woman unfortunately was killed and the shark returned on an unknown number of occasions to remove portions of her in feeding.’
Why Sharks Attack will look at how climate change has altered the amount of shark attacks and shark behaviours, with interviews from victims and witnesses.
Why Sharks Attack airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
