After a lengthy hiatus due to the epidemic, Race Around The Globe returns to our screens tonight with its third season.
We last saw this beautiful bit of thrilling but escapism TV in April 2020, when uncle and nephew Emon and Jamiul won the £20,000 prize.
The BBC hitchhiking adventure programme returns on Wednesday night, and this time five new pairs of friends or relatives will race from one end of Canada to the other without flying.
Earlier seasons had competitors race from one end of South America to the other, while the inaugural saw the group race from London to Singapore.
Yet, while we brace for the drama of the upcoming series (which reportedly includes ‘genuinely dangerous’ bear encounters), where is the cast of series two now?
Shuntelle Greenidge & Michael Greenway
During the second season of Race Around The Globe, project manager Shuntelle and health and safety construction consultant Michael were dating.
They were the first couple to depart the programme, leaving after the second of eight legs, which took them from Copán Ruinas in Honduras to Panama City, Panama.
With only 14% of their budget remaining after Michael misplaced his travel belt containing monney, they pulled out due to a lack of funds.
Shuntelle appears to be content with her position at the same firm she worked for before to the programme, whilst Michael appears to have considered a presenting career after appearing on The One Show, Gogglebox, and a BBC2 dating documentary.
It’s unclear whether they’re still together.
Jo Gardiner & Sam Gardiner
Jo, a physiotherapist, and Sam, a landscape gardener, completed the challenge all the way to the seventh leg.
The family team was tasked with travelling from Ilha Grande, an island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil, to Mendoza, Argentina, but they ran out of money.
They eventually dropped out of the race on a cattle ranch near Córdoba, Argentina.
Jo revealed on the reunion programme that her cancer had resurfaced, but that it was now gratefully in remission.
The couple appears to have continued to love travelling together, as Jo announced on Twitter in January that they were heading to Mexico to visit some of the attractions they missed during the show.
‘Caves, underwater museum, Mayan temples and obviously food and margaritas!!’ she shared.
Dom Slater & Lizzie Slater
Dom, a teaching assistant, and Lizzie, a chalet host, completed Race Across The World all the way to the conclusion.
They came in third place after attempting to negotiate their way from Mendoza to Ushuaia and running out of money for a taxi for the final leg, forcing them to hitchhike.
As a result, they were the last to arrive, arriving two hours after the other teams.
Lizzie has accepted a logical professional shift to become an influencer since the series’ conclusion and the return of travel.
Her Instagram shows her skiing in France earlier this year, as well as relaxing in the sun in Puglia, Italy, and attending the Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire last year.
Dom currently works as an associate creative director at an award-winning e-commerce growth firm, where he has been since June 2022. He previously worked as a corporate development representative.
Jen Lambra-Stokes & Rob Lambra-Stokes
Jen and Rob, a resourcing consultant and a systems engineer, had maybe the most agonising voyage on Race Around The Globe.
They were defeated to first place on the shoe by only 20 seconds following a thrilling foot sprint to the last checkpoint at Cerro Alarkén’s top.
Jen and Rob are still as in love as they were in March 2023, and they even had lovely twin boys in December 2021.
They are still still ecstatic about their time on the programme, even appearing on local radio to reminisce before ‘handing on the baton’ to the next group of daring explorers.
Emon Choudhury & Jamiul Choudhury
Finally, we have the victors, Emon and Jamiul, uncle and nephew.
The entrepreneur and architecture graduate were deserving victors of the event, giving it their all until the last seconds when it came down to a sprint.
Emon has gone on to run marathons as a charity fundraiser and ambassador since their victory, even earning a provincial Pride of Britain Award for his efforts in 2022.
He won the medal after completing a marathon while fasting for Ramadan and earning £34,000 for his father’s orphanage in Bangladesh.
Emon and his wife also have a daughter named Lilliya, who was born in October 2021.
Jamiul continues to work as an architectural designer, and he has also created his own YouTube channel.
Race Across The World starts at 9pm on BBC One on Wednesday, March 22.
