Unforgotten, the ITV crime thriller that left fans startled and devastated two years ago, is returning.
The award-winning criminal drama returns tonight (February 27) at 9 p.m., with viewers still reeling from the events of season four.
The show follows DI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and her colleagues as they seek to solve a succession of long-unsolved cold cases.
Nevertheless, owing to the events of Series 4, a large inflow of new individuals will be joining Unforgotten – will they be up to the task?
Here’s what happened at the end of Series 4 that prompted a slew of adjustments.
Ending of Unforgotten series four explained
DCI Cassie Stuart and her team, DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DC Fran Lingley (Carolina Main), felt they had an open and close case in season 4 of Unforgotten when they discovered a dead corpse that had been preserved in a freezer for 30 years.
But, the case quickly escalated, and what began as a probe into a possible vehicle accident became an investigation into the role that four police academy graduates had in the death of the frozen man.
A 30-year-old case was unexpectedly thrown wide open for Cassie, Sunny, and Fran to solve, with a variety of probable suspects and a fountain pen suspected as the murder weapon.
What happened to Cassie at the end of Unforgotten?
Everything appeared to be in order following Fiona’s (Liz White), Ram’s (Phaldut Sharma), and Dean’s (Andy Nyman) admissions.
But, audiences were left saddened when DCI Stuart, the show’s primary character from the start, was tragically killed off in a vehicle accident.
Doctors sought to save her life, but the fourth season ended with DI Khan delivering a moving eulogy at her burial.
‘If we’d known COVID was coming, we would have given folks a less depressing storyline,’ the writers claimed afterwards.
How will the programme continue without her?
What can we expect from Unforgotten series five?
First and foremost, there is a new DCI in town. To be more specific, DCI Jessica James. She’ll be in command this time, as played by Irish actress Sinéad Keenan.
This time, her team will investigate the discovery of human remains at a property in Hammersmith, London.
Sunny suspects a ‘gang war,’ but his colleagues are unsure. Tony will be played by Game of Thrones and Derry Girls actor Ian McElhinney.
Tony is a former politician who is living a good life until a horrible secret from his past threatens to bring it all crashing down around him. ‘He’s certainly involved in some manner,’ McElhinney added.
