Paul Burrell believes he is being plagued by the ghost of Princess Diana, and the moment he reportedly makes touch with her has been filmed.
The 65-year-old former I’m A Celebrity star was Princess Diana’s butler from 1987 until her death a decade later in a car accident in Paris, and he later published a biography on his time with the Royal family.
In the next episode of Celebrity Help! In My House Is Haunted, Paul alleges that he and his spouse Graham Cooper have been plagued by unexplained paranormal activity in their Cheshire house, including unusual noises and the odour of tobacco.
Paul believes he is being visited by the Princess’ spirit, saying, “If anyone could come back, it would be the Princess.” And if she wanted to tell me something, I believe my Princess would come to me.
In bizarre scenes, paranormal specialist Ian Lawman breaks down in tears and swears he has been ‘destroyed’ after claiming to have experienced Princess Diana’s ghost.
Ian and Paul then ‘make contact’ with ‘Princess Diana’, with her ghost supposedly answering their calls with: ‘I’m here. Sorry.’
The story opens with Paul recounting some of the terrible, unexplained events that have tormented him and his husband Graham over the years.
He recalls: ‘My husband woke up at three o’clock in the morning, reared up in bed, and is screaming, “There’s somebody in the room, there’s somebody in the room! I can see somebody at the foot of the bed!”
‘I wake up, bolt upright, and I can see a shape or something; I seriously thought about a shotgun or a baseball bat. Because we are in the middle of nowhere, and nobody would hear us scream.’
Paul maintains that the levels of paranormal activity within his house have risen over time, and as a previous sceptic, he credits the late Princess Diana with turning him on to the realm of the paranormal.
He explains: ‘I was taught a long time ago by Princess Diana, that there is something, and she was a great believer. I think a little of that rubbed off on me.’
Other unusual things Paul and Graham have noticed in their home include the odour of tobacco smoke and frequent ‘thudding’ noises in their upstairs bedroom.
In search of answers, Paul says he frequently wonders whether the late Princess is attempting to reach out to him, and if her ghost pays him a visit on occasion.
He tells producers: ‘I think if anybody could come back, it would be the Princess. And if she wanted to tell me something, I think my Princess would come to me.’
As the crew arrives, Ian enters the residence to begin the investigation, declaring that there is a ‘female presence’ with energy ‘all about’ the house.
The spirit’s presence causes Ian to suddenly burst into tears as he says: ‘It’s really got to me. This is Paul Burrell’s house. I used to read for Princess Diana and that’s the emotion and feeling in the car and now it’s just got to me.’
Bringing Paul into the inquiry, the team attempts to contact Diana.
In a spirit triggers sessions, where the team captures and projects spirit voices, Paul tries to make contact by calling out: ‘Hello, hello! It’s me. Are you watching over me?’
In between the static, the team hear a voice saying: ‘I’m here. Sorry.’
Shaking his head in disbelief, clearly emotional, Paul replies: ‘You don’t have to be sorry.’
Over the years, Paul has frequently discussed Princess Diana, particularly her response to his bottom tattoo and how he believes she would have reacted to different previous Royal events.
However, last year Paul found himself in the firing line after branded Prince Harry a ‘hypocrite’.
Speaking on Lorraine ahead of the release of Harry’s biography Spare, Paul speculated on whether Harry will attend the coronation ceremony.
‘How can he possibly be sat in a House of God in Westminster Abbey where his mother’s funeral was to watch his father be crowned king,’ he said.
‘It seems a little hypocritical to me when what he’s been doing recently is dismantle the monarchy, not build it.’
However, his words infuriated many people, who said that Paul’s continuous mention of the royal family did not make him any better.
