Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 2.
We’re just two weeks into Season 3 of The Mandalorian, and the Star Wars series has already put Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu in danger on Mandalore.
In episode 2 of Disney Plus, the father-son combo set off for the Mandalorians’ former homeworld when Din’s friend Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), who previously governed the planet, declined to accompany them.
Bo-Katan initially appeared on the show in season 2 when she and her allies fought with Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), and she is forced to save the day when Din is caught, making her the genuine MVP of the episode.
Later, the group pays a visit to the Mandalore mines’ Living Waters, where Din seeks penance in order to be welcomed back into his Mandalorian faith despite his crime… They come across the fabled and amazing mythosaur while there.
Grogu reunites with his number one fan Peli Motto
Din turns to an old buddy in quest of a replacement memory circuit for the droid IG-11 – Tatooine-based Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris), whose affection for Grogu knows no boundaries.
While Peli is unable to assist him with his IG-11 enquiry, she does supply him with a different droid, R-5, to accompany him on his perilous journey to Mandalore, the Mandalorians’ devastated and damaged homeworld.
As the Kid reunites with Peli, he jumps out of his dad’s N-1 starfighter right into her arms, proving how much progress he’s made with the Force since the last time he saw her.
Peli’s droid may be an astromech, but it’s plainly terrified by the prospect of heading to Mandalore… It begs the issue of whether it’ll be able to carry out the job of scanning the area to verify it’s safe and breathable to investigate.
Touch down in Mandalore – aka a death trap
Landing on Mandalore proves to be a dangerous endeavour, as Din must fly through a frightening storm to reach the ground below.
At first, it appears that the terrain is devoid of life, until R-5 and Din come across hostile animals, which the Mandalorian defeats in hand-to-hand battle while striving to wield the Darksaber.
Din and Grogu are travelling through a subterranean city when he stumbles upon a Mandalorian helmet sunken in the soil… before being imprisoned in a metal cage by a scary, robotic entity.
While Mando’s body fluids are being drained from him through the bars, he begs the Child to summon Bo-Katan for assistance.
Bo-Katan swoops in to save the day
When Bo-Katan first spots Din’s starfighter land back on her castle grounds, she initially plans on telling him to leave him alone once and for all.
But when she realises that Grogu is on his own and Mando is in danger, she immediately springs into action, travelling back to Mandalore, the planet that her family used to rule.
Bo-Katan makes it to Din, grabbing his Darksaber from the ground to conquer the creature that’s keeping Mando captive.
Despite Din being in a weakened state, she reluctantly says she’ll escort him to the Living Waters in the mines of Mandalore, where he believes he can find redemption for betraying his creed by removing his helmet in public.
A first look at rumoured mythical creature the mythosaur
Given Din’s forebears, it’s long been speculated that a mythosaur – a fabled creature from the Star Wars universe – will appear in The Mandalorian.
The massive beast was also hinted to in the first episode of the programme, when Kuiil (Nick Nolte), a Ugnaught, was teaching Din how to ride a Blurrg, telling him, ‘You are a Mandalorian!’ Your forefathers rode the mighty Mythosaur. You must be able to ride this young foal.’
As Din and Bo-Katan arrive to the Living Waters, she finds an inscription on the wall that tells how the mines date back to the time of the first Mandalore, which was thought to be the lair of the mythosaur in ancient legend.
The Mandalore was supposed to have tamed the fabled beast, which resulted in the skull signet being chosen as the planet’s insignia.
Din is drawn beneath the surface by an unseen power as he enters the seas, swearing a promise to always tread the way of the Mandalore.
Bo-Katan dives after him and discovers him at the bottom of the pool… As she takes a seemingly conscious Din back to the top, she comes across a gigantic beast with an eye that looks back at her.
It appears that the old mythosaur has arrived… Therefore, at the conclusion of the season, may we see Mando riding the famous beast? Many admirers are hoping so!
