The developer of The Last of Us drew an interesting comparison between showcasing historical goods and firearms in the TV series.
The post-apocalyptic programme, based on the famous computer game of the same name, has been praised for shattering taboos around menstruation.
Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was handed a menstruation cup and an instruction booklet in episode six, which is something that is sometimes overlooked on television.
Yet, despite the fact that it was a brief sequence, many viewers praised its inclusion.
One wrote: ‘I am so obsessed with #TheLastOfUs finally showing us how people deal with menstruation in the apocalypse.’
About the detail, showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Ellie understanding how to use the cup – as she appears astonished before folding it as the guidelines say – didn’t require any further explanation.
He said: ‘It goes by very quickly. The intention was that if you don’t know what it is, you can ask someone or you can Google. It’s more for the people who do know what it is.’
Craig added to Vulture: ‘We do this all the time in shows with things like guns. People don’t know how to load guns, and we don’t explain it to them. Why should we have to explain this?’
A menstrual cup, an alternative to sanitary pads and tampons, is put into the vagina while someone is on their period and is constructed of materials such as silicone or latex. The cup catches the blood before being removed, drained, and washed before being reinserted.
Ellie was shown unearthing a box of tampons in a previous episode, while Joel (Pedro Pascal) dug up his old stockpile of equipment.
‘These are fundamental goods that we’d need or desire,’ Craig continued to the newspaper. It’s inconvenient to have to deal with it and a lack of alternatives in a postapocalyptic world. Why wouldn’t we display it? Particularly because our co-leader is a 14-year-old girl. This is a normal part of her life!’
He went on to say that the product ‘is a perfect answer in the ongoing apocalypse’ since it’s’reusable,’ unlike the tampons Ellie previously discovered and would have ran out of eventually.
The Last of Us is available to watch on Sky and NOW, with new episodes released on Mondays.
