Adam Hills claims he was robbed while asleep and was subjected to a chemical assault.
The comedian and The Last Leg presenter, 53, was on vacation in Italy when the terrifying incident occurred.
He’d been having fun, he stated on social media, tweeting what he termed “Notes from a weekend in Venice connected.” Including a security warning for unwary tourists.’
He opened his article with a lighthearted sonnet about the city, penning the following.
‘Venice is beautiful, Aussies are everywhere, Americans are still loud, Italians know not to take your espresso away when there’s a tiny bit left in the cup,’ he wrote.
However, he then warned others to ‘lock your door with both locks on the night train’ to the city.
‘Our compartment was broken into while we slept and some of our stuff was stolen,’ he explained.
‘The rail guards later said “You have to lock both locks because they have keys”. They also said “this happens every day” (information that would have come in handy at the beginning of the trip).’
He also went on to write that their tour guide has told them that thieves operating there ‘sometimes use gas to make you sleep more solidly’.
‘The weird thing is, someone knocked on our door around 4.30am. They may have even opened the door. We can’t be sure,’ he continued.
‘We slept super solidly for the next two hours and awoke, dazed, groggy and missing a backpack and bumbag.’
He concluded his post by sharing that while Venice was beautiful, ‘be sure to lock both your locks on the night train’.
Österreichische Bundesbahnen, the train operator on which he travelled, then reacted.
On his post it wrote: ‘We are very sorry that this has happened to you. We want all our passengers to feel safe at all times. The situation you explain does not meet this standard at any means. Please fill in our contact form here, in order to investigate further.’
Others responded to Adam’s message, relaying similar experiences from the past.
‘Still with the gas trick? I was warned of that in 1988 when I had a Eurail pass,’ one person shared,
‘I hadn’t realised that this was still going on to be honest,’ someone else wrote.
‘There were stories of this when I was Interrailing in 1992 and this was why we took sets of bungy chords with us to tie through the handles. Met others who have had a similar experience to you. Hope everyone involved is ok,’ they added.
