James Buckley, actor of The Inbetweeners, has outlined why he believes the programme will never return to television.
The adolescent sitcom follows teenaged William McKenzie (Simon Bird) and his pals Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison), and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley) at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive for three seasons between 2008 and 2010.
However, in the years after the show’s cancellation, it has been chastised for its’sexism and casual homophobia,’ with several of its performers coming out.
Now, James, 36, has shut down discussions about restarting the programme once more.
While the actor’s role was most known for his far-flung sex tales, James claimed he wasn’t bothered about the content and whether or not it would hold up today because the characters were simply ‘idiots’.
Instead, James stated that he felt the problem would be that the jokes would appear quite strange coming from mature guys.
‘It was all justified because they were never the heroes,’ he said.
‘They were idiots and they got what they deserved.
‘That’s why it can’t come back – you can’t have men in their late thirties acting like they’re in sixth form and getting away with that stuff,’ he added when speaking to the Daily Mail.
While some have questioned the programme in recent years, James acknowledged his appreciation for it and how a previous statement regarding the prospect of returning last year was misread.
‘I always get asked if I’d ever do more and I said “For no amount of money” and that quote got run away,’ he explained.
‘I didn’t mean about money – it means more to me than money.’
James went on to star in White Gold, Doctor Who, and, most recently, Celebrity MasterChef after leaving the programme.
He did, however, become the first UK celebrity to become a Cameo millionaire last year after amassing $1 million (£930,000) on the app.
Despite having made roughly 40,000 videos since starting his account, James admitted that he has turned down some requests.
He admitted that he frequently had to decline requests to sing songs from The Inbetweeners or recite phrases since he couldn’t recall the desired portions.
‘I can’t remember it. Even with work I can’t remember things let alone something I did that long ago,’ he said.
After the app’s great success was disclosed, James stated the money he’d gained had been a ‘godsend financially’.
The Inbetweeners is streaming on Channel 4.
