It’s easy to say that The Idol is making quite a commotion, but perhaps not in the way its creators Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye and Sam Levinson had anticipated.
The narrative of a teenage popstar struggling to get her career back on track following a nervous breakdown is told in the US drama series, which also stars Lily-Rose Depp.
When she returns to the world of Hollywood, she finds it to be a nightmare, with her privacy breached and ruthless moguls exploiting her.
Due of its problematic subjects, the series has sparked significant controversy on social media, much like creator Levinson’s earlier series, Euphoria.
However, while The Idol was always going to be criticised for depicting abuse and exploitation, many are finding it difficult to take it seriously.
The Weeknd’s ‘Dirty Talk’
The issue about nasty conversation is that it either works or it doesn’t. To put it another way, it’s an acquired taste. A personal preference. There’s nothing wrong with it, and there’s a lot to like about it, and in the proper circumstances, it can be a game changer.
Even those who don’t mind a little dirty narration were probably cringing on the inside at a sequence in episode two when Abel wasn’t exactly using his sexy tones to their full potential.
In a scene branded ‘the worst sex scene ever’, Abel’s media mogul Tedros talks dirty to Lily Rose’s Jocelyn, saying: ‘F*****g stretch that tiny little p****y,’ among other, erm, delightful phrases.
The Non-Threatening Curb-Stomp Rant
Following episode three, one footage that quickly went viral was one of Tedros, er, “threatening” a member of his staff for daring to look at Jocelyn.
‘Let me catch you looking at her again,’ Tedros says into his subordinate’s ear. ‘Let me f*****g catch you again gazing at her,’ he says.
When the unfortunate guy attempts to explain himself, arguing that he wasn’t staring at Jocelyn at all, Tedros’, um, “rant” kicks into high gear.
‘If I f*****g catch you looking at her again, I’ll f*****g drag you down Rodeo [Drive] by your f*****g a**. I’ll f*****g curb-stomp you.’ It doesn’t exactly land.
A ‘Disgusting’ Jeffrey Epstein Joke
Everyone enjoys a good Jeffrey Epstein joke. Or not.
Another episode three flashpoint involves Eli Roth’s character Andrew Finkelstein, a Live Nation salesperson on the show.
During the scenario in question, Andrew tells Jocelyn’s manager that he’s worried about Jocelyn going on tour despite having no genuine songs.
‘Right now, she’s making me have IBS,’ Andrew exclaims. ‘I’m f*****g s******g more blood than a kid on Epstein’s island.’ Lovely stuff.
World Class Sinner (Tedros’ Version)
As part of the series’ soundtrack, a few songs have made their way onto social media as part of The Idol’s soundtrack.
‘World Class Sinner,’ sung by Lily-Rose in character as Jocelyn, was one of the songs released after episode one.
Fans of Blackpink were treated to a spectacular dance routine by member Jennie, whose performance to the song was one of the premiere’s rare highlights.
However, in episode two, a remix of the song by Abel’s character Tedros is given to Jocelyn’s management, who are requested to compare it to the original.
However, it is immediately evident that the remix is vastly different from the original, with piles of sexual sounds in the entrance.
Later in the show, Jocelyn ‘grinds on a whisky glass’ while listening to the music, in a moment that one viewer found ‘too much’.
