When is The Handmaid’s Tale going to return to the UK? (Picture: Hulu)
For fans of The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s been a long two-year wait for season four in the US and the UK, with the season three finale airing in 2019.
However, TV network Hulu decided to treat viewers to season four in the US earlier than planned, launching the first three episodes overnight.
In a video shared on the show’s official social media page, the cast – including Elisabeth Moss, who plays lead June Osborne – announced: ‘I know you’ve been waiting patiently for season four. Well guess what, I have some good news.’
So when will season four air in the UK and what’s going to happen in the upcoming instalments?
When will it air in the UK?
While The Handmaid’s Tale fans in the US have been treated to the first three episodes of the new season, there still isn’t news on when season four will launch in the UK on Channel 4.
When the third season of the drama premiered in the US, the first episode aired on June 5 2019.

In the UK, the season launched just a few days later on June 9.
So while there isn’t confirmation on a launch date for season four in the UK, we would assume that fans won’t have long to wait until they can see what June, her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and her captors the Waterfords (Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski) have been up to since we saw them last.
Following the launch of the first three episodes in the US, the rest of the season will be released on a weekly basis.
What will happen in season 4?
At the end of season three, June carried out a successful operation with the help of fellow Handmaids and Marthas to smuggle a large group of children out of Gilead on a plane into Canada.
However, June decided to stay behind to try and free her eldest daughter, Hannah.

In the official synopsis for the season released by Hulu, it states that the new season ‘picks up where we left off, with June’s fight for freedom against Gilead’.
However, as can be expected, there are obstacles that she needs to overcome, as the description states that ‘the risks she takes bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges, and her desire for justice and revenge threaten to consume her and destroy her most cherished relationships’.
It was never going to be a smooth ride.
Is there a trailer?
Earlier this week, a teaser for The Handmaid’s Tale season four was released.
While the trailer shows June making a rallying cry to the women in Gilead, women continue to be imprisoned and abused in the country’s terrible, dystopian conditions.
‘My name is June Osbourne. Mine is just one voice, countless others remain unheard,’ the protagonist says.
‘Women imprisoned by men who can never be heard again. It is for those women, I ask for justice.’
The first three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
