The Graham Norton Show has apparently been thrown into disarray, with show executives reportedly failing to get major names because to the Sag-Aftra strikes.
Hollywood went on strike in early July after the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists voted overwhelmingly to walk out after weeks of failed negotiations.
Negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents companies such as Disney, Warner Brothers, and Netflix, failed to produce new contracts.
Members’ requests have included improved compensation and increased safeguards for AI rights.
As a result, renowned discussion shows like The Graham Norton Show are having difficulty securing A-listers who have been vocal in their support for the authors.
A source told The Mirror: ‘The BBC is in crisis as the Hollywood strikes are causing its flagship chat show an absolute headache for its next run later this year.’
According to the source, even British celebrities have eschewed advertising and promotion ‘out of sympathy.’
The strike has halted existing and planned productions for the Screen performers Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which represents 160,000 television and film performers.
New seasons of The White Lotus, Emily in Paris, House of the Dragon, and Industry may be disrupted, as well as films such as Beetlejuice 2, Paddington in Peru, and the Gladiator sequel.
Just before the strike was announced, the cast of Oppenheimer walked the red carpet in London for the film’s UK premiere.
The WGA has also expressed concern about the development of streaming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) endangering authors’ jobs.
The last time there was a writer’s strike was in 2007, when it lasted 100 days and cost the economy $2.1 billion (£1.6 billion) in California alone.
Many notable people have backed the strikes, including Tom Hanks, Pete Davidson, Drew Barrymore, and US President Joe Biden.
