The Apprentice’s Rochelle Anthony has spoken up about the influence her self-assigned Kim Kardashian moniker had on her, saying that it did her “wonders.”
Tonight, Rochelle will compete against Marnie Swindells in the final of the BBC competition, with each fledgling entrepreneur seeking to earn Lord Alan Sugar’s £250,000 investment to begin their firms.
Although Marnie plans to grow her boxing gym idea, Rochelle is keen to expand her hair shop, catering to all various types of hair and giving tutorials for industry professionals.
Rochelle branded herself in her VT as the “Kim Kardashian of the business world” before of the commencement of the 2023 series, which drew a lot of attention.
Looking back, the 35-year-old said how the similarity aided her in appealing to people who may relate to her or be interested in her business.
‘I knew I was going to be open to criticism. Even my first VT, where I said, “I’m the Kim Kardashian of the business world”… I think a lot of people took that wrong, but it just did me wonders because I think the girls that resonated with me were the girls that maybe look like me and are into hair [and] make-up,’ she said.
‘But slowly, I think I actually turned the public’s opinion around and they thought, “She’s not an airhead, she’s actually got a bit about her.”’
Rochelle noted that it was a “win-win” situation for her because it was a “really tongue-in-cheek response” that “showcased who I am.”
‘I don’t really take myself too seriously. It has actually been really well received,’ she stated, adding that her achievement of reaching the final demonstrates that ‘you can wear whatever you like, it’s your body, it’s your life, and you can still be successful in business’.
In response to the reactions she received on social media, Rochelle stated that she has “certainly had the odd troll here and there,” but she is “very trigger-happy with the block button.”
‘I always knew I was going to get judgement initially, because I’m in the hair and beauty industry and it all comes part and parcel with the job,’ she shared.
This admission made her want to ‘prove’ that she’ll “never be a generalisation,” but would always be her “true, authentic, genuine self.”
The Apprentice final airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
