Susanna Reid has admitted that she attempted a 36-hour fast, but it did not last long.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has lately stated that he fasts for a day and a half at the start of each week in a ‘very strict’ practice.
On Monday’s Good Morning Britain, Susanna and Richard Madeley discussed whether they would be able to follow suit.
Richard, 67, promised to try it, but Susanna, 53, said she had already done so. And things didn’t go as planned.
‘I had I would say a big day on Saturday of eating junk, and then I read this story, and I thought, “Well if the Prime Minister can do 36 hours, I should be able to do something similar,”‘ she said.
Susanna planned to begin her fast on Saturday about half past nine, after she had completed her meal, and to continue it until Monday morning.
Unfortunately, everything came to an end far sooner than she had planned.
‘At half past 11 on Sunday morning, 14 hours in, I was the definition of hangry!’ she admitted.
‘And my blood sugar, I could feel myself kind of wobbling. There was no way I could do more than 14 hours without eating.’
A source close to the Prime Minister told The Sunday Times that he ‘doesn’t eat anything at all on a Monday’ as part of his regular fasting practice.
‘It’s remarkable really given that he is often on visits or doing PMQ prep on a Monday,’ they told the publication.
‘It’s a real testament to the discipline, focus and determination that he shows in all aspects of his life and work.’
The politician fasts as part of his Hindu beliefs.
Earlier this month, Ed Balls inadvertently kicked Susanna in the head when they were filming a piece about aeroplane etiquette.
Susanna claimed that she then received letters from fans accusing her of being overly theatrical in her reaction.
‘I should point out, it was the hard heel of his shoe, swung with the full heft of his leg. I would describe that as a clonk,’ she said in response.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
