Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite was as surprised as the rest of us by a squirting ‘penis fish’.
Yes, you read it correctly.
The 34-year-old Bake Off star learns something unexpected on a trip to South Korea for Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped.
He and presenter Kate Quilton have an astonishing surprise that leaves him speechless.
At Daecheon beach, the couple discovers a shocking and memorable monster, dropping lots of innuendos along the way.
On the quest for ‘gaebuls’, Kate and John dig ‘deep holes’ in the sand at low tide that are precisely ten and a half inches long, as John measures with his hand.
Digging through the moist sand, John ultimately finds one, and it does not resemble a fish.
‘Why is it squirting? Is this a gaebul?’ he asks their guide, holding it up in his hands.
As either end bulges out and drops down, John remarks: ‘Oh, it’s very stretchy.’
After processing that he’s holding something that looks rather X-rated, he squirms: ‘Ahhh! I don’t like it!’
Kate then takes one of the slimy animals from the bucket, while the instructor informs that the fish’s real name is ‘penis fish’.
He then explains: ‘Koreans say this is originally a monster, but it resembles the male genitals and is known as a penis fish.’
‘Did you just say penis fish?’ John questions.
‘I knew it looked familiar!’ he jokingly adds.
Despite their discomfort with the first one, the couple continues digging for others, with Kate reiterating their new motto: ‘Every hole is a goal.’
However, she quickly returns it when she holds the penis fish in her hands and it squirts forth a liquid.
The fish exude mucus from glands on the front of their head appendages, which adheres to their U-shaped tunnels in the sand.
In Korea, gaebul are commonly eaten raw with salt and sesame or chilli oil. It is reported to have a chewy texture and has aphrodisiac properties.
Food Unwrapped’s South Korean Adventure airs tonight, Tuesday, January 16, at 8pm on Channel 4.
