Neve Campbell hinted about a potential comeback to the Scream franchise.
The actress played final girl Sidney Prescott in the first five films before leaving before of the sixth due to a salary disagreement.
Shortly after Spyglass announced a seventh film, Melissa Barrera was reportedly removed from her starring role as Sam Carpenter due to statements she made against Israel’s battle with Hamas on social media in November.
Jenna Ortega, who played her sister Tara, left the movie shortly after, and director Christopher Landon also left, raising questions about how production will proceed.
Neve was questioned over the future of Scream at a Bafta Tea event in LA, and told IndieWire: ‘It’s sad to me that they’re struggling at the moment. I would imagine that the people at the top are spinning a little bit, trying to make the right decision.
‘I think I would imagine people want to do the right thing. I would hope. I love this franchise. I love it for Wes [Craven]. I love it for all the people who’ve been involved and even the newer cast. I would hope it doesn’t fall apart.’
When asked if she would consider going up against Ghostface once again, she continued: ‘Given the right circumstances? Yes.
‘I made a statement several years ago, and it was the reason that I didn’t do the film at the time, and I just really felt the need to stand up and say that I don’t believe I would’ve been treated that way had I been a man carrying a franchise for 25 years, and that still stands.
‘So, if they were to choose to come back to me, that would continue to be my takeaway. We’ll see.’
Further unpacking her stance with the Hollywood Reporter, she added that she would ‘not be surprised to get a call’ from film bosses, following the backlash over Melissa’s exit
‘Would I do it? There are millions of fans out there of this franchise. These movies mean a lot to people. They mean a lot to me.
‘They meant a lot to all of these cast members, and we would all love to see this franchise continue. I would hate to see it burn. So, we’ll see.’
Neve devastated hearts all across the world in 2022 when she announced that she will not reprise her role as Sidney in Scream 6, which was released in theatres last year.
In a statement, she noted that she thought the offer she received was unrelated to what she had done for Scream over the years, having led the way since the debut film in 1996.
Kevin Williamson, who served as writer and producer across the franchise, later begged bosses to ‘pay her the money’.
‘I totally respect her opinion. I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well,’ he said in September on the Happy Horror Time podcast.
‘I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I love everyone involved in Scream and all I can say is, pay her the money.
‘That’s what I would do, I would give her the money.’
Kevin also revealed his plans for Sidney’s future if Neve returned for the latest sequel, stating: “Scream 6 would have been the love story of Sidney Prescott, and it would’ve been this whole thing of she’s falling in love, she’s going to get married, and it’s all based around her marriage when these murders start happening again.”
‘It’s like, is this man that she’s in love with the killer again? Is she Billy Loomis-ing herself all over again? Is she still making the wrong decisions? Is she still choosing the bad guy?
‘Of course, the big result was [that] it wasn’t. He was there for real. She got her happy ending. I felt like that she had gone through so much, I was absolutely determined that Sidney Prescott had overcome all of it.’
