Stranger Things fans have been left gnawing their nails, fearful that the Hollywood writers’ strike may have an impact on the fifth and final season.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has thousands of TV and film writers on strike after major studios failed to give a sufficient compensation package.
The walkout is the largest of its sort since 2007, when over 12,000 writers and production workers went on strike for more than three months.
While the strike is in effect, all late-night talk shows, including those hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, have been halted.
Several actors, including Edie Falco from The Sopranos, have reportedly refused to cross picket lines in support of the writers’ unions.
The strike may jeopardise the production of numerous major TV programmes, including the Netflix sci-fi blockbuster Stranger Things, and fans are concerned.
‘Man, I really hope the writers strike doesn’t affect Stranger Things. I don’t want anything to delay season 5 any longer than it has to,’ one fan said.
A second viewer worried: ‘Just sitting here hoping the Duffer Brothers completed the last season of Stranger Things. I support the writers strike but feel bad.’
The reports that Stranger Things could be affected by the strike were first mentioned in The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday evening.
Another fan added: ‘Shows we love like Stranger Things … might get significantly delayed and or f***** up as result of the strike!’
Many Twitter users, however, pointed out that abandoning production of the world’s most popular shows is precisely the objective of the strike.
‘Peoples’ first reaction to the writer’s strike being “Oh no, what about Stranger Things 5?” is wild. Making sure the writers get paid fairly is more important.’
A second person added: ‘If Stranger Things gets delayed blame the billion dollar studios who don’t want to treat writers with the respect & dignity they deserve!’
The strike in 2007 hampered production on high-profile TV shows such as the action series 24, the blockbuster drama series Lost, and the comic sketch show Saturday Night Live.
Meanwhile, Stranger Things actor Grace Van Dien has said that a ‘essential’ character would most certainly die in the show’s final season.
