is apparently intending to let off additional employees, including some of its longest-serving and most popular broadcasters.
This comes after it was revealed that Soccer AM is due to be cancelled after nearly 30 years on the air, with host Jimmy Bullard reportedly ‘fuming’.
After broadcasting since 1995, the Saturday morning mainstay will expire at the conclusion of season three, with only 10 episodes remaining.
Staff at Soccer AM aren’t the only ones at risk, as The Daily Mail reports that Soccer Saturday may also be slashed.
Metro.co.uk understands that, while the Soccer Saturday and Soccer AM procedures remain distinct, no decisions have yet been made, and no reporters have been made redundant or forced to reapply for their positions.
A Sky spokesperson told us: ‘Our coverage of football is evolving to reflect the changing habits of our viewers and ensures we continue to deliver the best experience for customers.
‘Our proposal would mean the creation of new roles, and the closing of some existing roles, and we are currently in a consultation period with our people.’
Saturday Social is expected to replace Soccer AM, a newer football-based Sky programme that involves YouTube and online stars and is aimed at a younger audience.
Soccer AM was previously hosted by Helen Chamberlain and Tim Lovejoy, among others, and featured Peter Dale, also known as ‘Tubes’.
The scrapping of Soccer AM was described as a “complete bombshell” to staff by The Sun.
‘Morale is at an all-time low, they are raging,’ a source told the newspaper. ‘It’s going to be an interesting watch over the next few weeks.’
Meanwhile, a Sky Spokesperson said: ‘Soccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades, and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers.
‘We now go into a period of consultation to discuss the proposed changes with our people. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are underway.’
