Sir Tony Robinson had fans on the edge of their seats when he hinted at an Easter Monday Blackadder anniversary special.
The 76-year-old actor is most remembered for his role as Baldrick in the iconic 1980s sitcom, which spans four seasons and covers various periods of history.
He intimated that a 40th anniversary celebration is in the works, only months after resurrecting his persona for a one-off show for Comic Relief.
‘All I’m going to say is…everybody wants to celebrate a 40th anniversary, so there must be some new way we can commemorate our 40th birthday, don’t you think?’ he said on ITV’s Lorraine.
Meanwhile, Tony recalled a moment when Prince William promised him he would go on the show and said he will never tyres of hearing about it since it “transformed his life” and made him a celebrity in his late 30s.
‘This is absolutely true. You know how showbiz people make up stories? This is really true.
‘When I was being knighted by Prince William, almost 10 years ago, I was down on my knees, he brings the old sword down and he said: “I am such a fan of Blackadder” and I said to him: “Would you be on it?”
‘He said: “Yeah, if you asked me”. So in other words, I was casting whilst I was knighting!’
The star continued: ‘It’s lovely really, it never palls because it just transformed my life.’
‘I was 38 by the time I did it but I was a child actor so I had been about a quarter of a century in the business when suddenly my whole life was transformed by the generosity of Rowan [Atkinson] and the producer John Lloyd, who let me have all those little extra shots and lines’.
The popular show debuted on television in 1983 and ran for four seasons and various specials.
Rowan and Sir Tony were last seen on screen in the 2000 special Blackadder Back & Forth.
Since then, rumours of a fifth season have surfaced on occasion, but have never materialised due to the actors and show writers’ refusal to confirm the rumours.
