I’m A Celebrity South Africa’s first celebrity has been eliminated.
Gillian McKeith and Shaun Ryder, Phil Tufnell and Georgia ‘Toff’ Toffolo, and Andy Whyment and Jordan Banjo competed in a Bushtucker Trial on Friday night.
After being transported back to the main camp after a spell on basic rations in Savannah Scrub, Shaun, Phil, and Andy had to pick a fellow campmate to team up with.
Because they’re competing in the ‘all stars’ series, there will be no public vote this time, so the losers of the gruelling survival challenges will be eliminated automatically.
Gillian and Shaun were the first to leave after failing horribly at a terrifying job.
For Savage Safari, the six celebrities were chained together and competed to break free and hit the buzzer first.
Of course, in classic I’m A Celeb fashion, they had to stick their hands inside cartons… which were far from empty.
The celebs confronted their anxieties as they blindly plunged their arms into anything from snakes to rodents.
Well, the majority of them did… Gillian did not make it through the first box.
Meanwhile, Shaun completed his portion of the task but was unable to proceed without his buddy, who merely screamed.
When asked mid-trial by hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly if he’regretted’ picking her as a partner, the Happy Mondays singer quipped that he did.
They were both ‘gutted’ to be eliminated first once their removal was verified, as they weren’t prepared.
‘I’m sad to leave because I really wanted to stay,’ Gillian said.
When asked what went wrong during the trial, the Scottish star explained: ‘There were quite a few snakes in there, and one of the heads popped out and I got such a fright. I put my hand in, I went down, and something wrapped itself around my hand and I couldn’t shift it.’
Shaun was very sad to say goodbye to his new buddy Phil, giving him a huge embrace as his friend returned to camp.
‘I wanted to take Phil home!’, he said.
The Manchester United midfielder claimed he’really liked’ his second trip at camp, admitting he ‘loved it’ despite not being in ‘the same nick’ as he was 12 years ago, now 60.
He and Gillian didn’t get along when they initially lived together in the Australian rainforest in 2010.
They look to have turned a new leaf, though.
‘My time in camp has been fantastic, it’s been absolutely the best time of my life and I can’t believe I’m saying that but it’s true,’ Gillian later told cameras.
‘I’m gutted to be going, but that’s just how it is,’ Shaun added.
‘And I’ve come out with a prize!’, he quipped, referencing his new unlikely friendship with Gillian.
‘I’ve won!’, he declared. ‘I knew we’d come full circle, happy days! Now we’re off to get married.’
Perhaps we’ll have to wait another 13 years to see that!
I’m A Celebrity South Africa continues each night at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
