Season four of Sex Education is coming to a conclusion, but there is still some hope for the future.
The new episodes will be available on Netflix next month, and creator Laurie Nunn has stated that the forthcoming season will be “the finale” of the Moordale gang’s saga.
‘It’s the end of the world as we know it,’ she told Netflix Tudum, revealing that while nothing was written in stone when she and the writing team began working on the season, things began to take form.
She added: ‘during that process, it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it.
‘I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time.’
However, even after taking a “pause” to focus on other projects, Laurie has refused to rule out working on future spin-offs set in the same environment.
‘I’m definitely taking a break and thinking about other things,’ she said. ‘But Moordale is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world.’
With new episodes on the way, how have characters like Otis, Eric, and Maeve – portrayed by Asa Butterfield, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey – evolved since the first season premiered in 2019?
‘If you go back and watch where they all started, they’ve really grown up so much and changed so much. In series four, we’re seeing our characters getting closer to launching themselves into the adult world,’ Laurie explained.
‘They’re right on the precipice of leaving being a teenager behind, and with that comes a lot of pressure. That feeling of limbo between being a child and a grown up is something we’re exploring in quite a particular way in this series. All of them have evolved hugely since series one.’
Sex Education returns to Netflix for its final season on September 21.
