In light of the series finale of Servant, in which Toby Kebbell stars, he has spoken about how much he enjoyed working with M. Night Shyamalan, praising the’realism’ that the director tries to convey in his films.
The psychological horror, which originally broadcast in 2019, features a couple called Sean Turner (Toby) and Dorothy Turner (Lauren Ambrose), who employ a nanny named Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free) (Nell Tiger Free).
The entrance of Leanne, whose job it is to care for a reborn doll named after the son Sean and Dorothy lost in real life when he was just 13 weeks old, sets off a chain reaction of unexplainable occurrences in the family, including the child’s apparent resurrection.
Ahead of the release of the fourth and final season, Metro.co.uk spoke to Black Mirror star Kebbell, who opened up on how unique an experience it was to be in a project by the The Sixth Sense filmmaker.
The 40-year-old recounted a ‘weird compliment’ he once received from Shyamalan, who was ‘impressed’ with him going above and beyond in the background of a scene.
‘M Might’s one of those people where you get weird – weird, I say that as an Englishman – you get a weird compliment, where he did a scene which is between Lauren and Rupert [Grint], and I’m in the background cooking,’ he recalled.
‘He watched and he was like, “It’s really, really a beautiful scene,” but he said, “The fact that you’re just blurred in the background but it really looks like you’re cooking.” I said, “I really did!”’
Kebbell wasn’t just faking it in the kitchen; the lengthy preparation time for the segment reveals that he was actually whipping up a delectable meal.
‘We made a lamb ragu, which sounds ridiculous, but that’s how long it takes to shoot scenes,’ he shared.
‘We cooked this whole time in the background and he said that element ties this whole thing together so well, because the end of the scene is literally me putting plates down.’
Kebbell expressed how ‘nice’ it was to have somebody like Shyamalan ‘who’s watching every detail like that and he finds those compliments’.
‘There’s the big ones and the grand ones and the big emotional scenes we do and how supportive he is there. But it’s those little things I’ll remember going forward. It’s those little moments where he was so impressed, he was like “Man, it looked like you had done that 1000 times or it just looked so confident and honest,”’ he added.
‘I think that’s what Night’s always looking for. He’s looking to almost capture [a] documentary version of the scene he’s playing at, that’s the realism level he wants.’
Kebbell expressed regret that his time working with Shyamalan on Servant was coming to a close, but he was grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with the filmmaker than other actors who appeared in his films.
‘I know I’ll probably not go on and shoot a bunch of movies with Night, but in a way I guess I feel like I’ve probably shot more with Night than a lot of people who’ve got to work with them on a movie have,’ he said.
Servant is streaming on Apple TV Plus, with new episodes of season 4 released on Fridays.
