Viewers on Netflix are tearing their hair out over Michelle Keegan’s role in the upcoming drama Fool Me Once.
The 36-year-old former Coronation Street actress portrays Maya, an ex-Army Officer dealing with the tragic death of her husband Joe (Richard Armitage) and her meddling mother-in-law Judith (Dame Joanna Lumley).
As police detective Sami (Adeel Akhtar) investigates the unusual circumstances surrounding Joe’s death, and Maya conducts her own inquiry, sinister truths begin to emerge.
However, Netflix fans have become infuriated that Maya keeps letting slip key evidence she has gathered to suspicious parties, as May Mavis expressed on X: ‘See one thing I don’t like about Maya is she finds evidence and doesn’t keep it to herself, tells everyone. girl!’
May’s sentiment was echoed by Tash Amaka, who raged: ‘Why does Maya insist on revealing any evidence she finds to suspicious people on her own?! #FoolMeOnce.’
Luna also remarked: ‘#FoolMeOnce why is Maya constantly showing people her evidence without looking into it herself first.’
While it’s tough to envision anybody other than Michelle playing the role, Julia Roberts was once in discussions to play the Harlan Coben adaption.
The Brassic actress and Dame Joanna previously described how she beat off the Pretty Woman queen, 56, for the part.
Michelle recalled: ‘I remember when I first met Harlan, he was saying that they were in talks with Julia because Julia wanted to make it into film. But the book wouldn’t have been a film really, it needed to be a series.’
Absolutely Fabulous star Dame Joanna added: ‘The book is fat because it’s dense with twists and turns. If you make a film, you’re going to have to drop half of that.
‘And I think that they maybe presented a treatment of the book as a film and I think that it probably didn’t work. But it’s interesting because [Julia] could see the quality of the story and this fascinating central character.’
Since its debut on Netflix on New Year’s Day, Fool Me Once has gone viral, with many fans joking that they were calling in sick to binge-watch the eight-part series.

One viewer, Michelle Pryde, raved on X: ‘5 episodes deep into #FoolMeOnce and questioning whether I really need a job and could call in sick for work tomorrow as I need to finish it!! I am HOOKED. @michkeegan is just brilliant.’
Jennifer Smith also enthused: ‘@HarlanCoben I am supposed to go back to work tomorrow after this holiday break but I can’t stop watching #FoolMeOnce. Back to being sleep deprived I go.’
